Key Takeaways
- Georgia and Albania allow about a year. Georgia's law gives US citizens one full year visa-free, and the US Embassy in Tirana says Americans can generally stay up to one year in Albania. Since 1 March 2026, working in Georgia, even remotely, needs a work permit.
- Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Armenia and Barbados go up to about six months. In Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica the officer at the border decides how many of those days you actually get.
- Europe is 90 days in any 180. The 29 Schengen countries share one clock, so a long stay in Portugal uses up your days in Spain and Italy too.
- Thailand fell to 30 days on 15 September 2026. The 60-day visa exemption Americans used for two years has been withdrawn.
- A visa-free entry is a tourist entry. Mexico's own entry form says visitors have no permission to do paid work, so long-term remote workers should look at nomad visas.
Americans can stay longest without a visa in Georgia, which allows a full year, and Albania, which allows up to a year. Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Armenia and Barbados allow up to about six months. Most of the rest of the world that is visa-free for a US passport, including the 29 Schengen countries, Japan, Taiwan and Argentina, stops at 90 days. These are the rules as of October 2026, checked on official sources, and they change often, so confirm before you book.
To find where to actually live, we matched each country with the best-scoring city in Nostos, Navoy's free city chooser for digital nomads, which scores 413 cities from 0 to 100 on cost, safety, internet, climate and more. By our count of the Nostos dataset, 258 cities outside the US let an American stay 90 days or more without a visa, spread across 68 countries. You can filter them yourself in the Nostos ranker set to a US passport and 90-day stays.
Where can Americans stay longest without a visa?
Georgia and Albania are the only places in the Nostos data where a US passport gets about a year with no application at all. After them comes a group of countries that allow up to 180 days, led by Mexico and Canada.
Georgia. Ordinance No 255 of the Government of Georgia says citizens of listed countries "may enter and stay in Georgia without visa for one full year", and the United States is on the list. There had been reports that Georgia was changing its rules, so we read the consolidated text dated 24 February 2026: the one-year stay for Americans is unchanged. One new rule does apply to everyone: since 1 January 2026 tourists must carry health and accident insurance worth at least 30,000 GEL. Working is a separate question: the UK Foreign Office says that since 1 March 2026 foreign nationals need a work permit to work in Georgia, including working remotely.
Albania. The US Embassy in Tirana says US citizens "generally are allowed to stay in Albania for up to one year without a residence permit". Short trips out of the country do not reset the year. To start a fresh year you must leave Albania for at least 90 days. If you take a job or stay longer than a year, you need a residence permit.
Mexico. Mexico's tourist entry form, the FMM, is valid for up to 180 days. The number is a ceiling, not a promise: the US Embassy in Mexico says Mexican immigration decides on arrival how long you may stay, so read the date on your stamp.
Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says most visitors can stay up to six months, and the border officer may allow less or more.
Which countries allow 6 months to a year visa-free?
As of October 2026, seven countries give a US passport between six months and a year, and we could confirm each on an official source. The table pairs each with its best-scoring city in Nostos.
| Country | Longest visa-free stay for US citizens | Best Nostos city | Nostos score (rank of 413) | Monthly cost, one person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Georgia | 1 full year (365 days) | Kutaisi | 63.0 (225) | $885 |
| Albania | Up to 1 year | Durrës | 66.4 (160) | $1,302 |
| Mexico | Up to 180 days, set at the border | Playa del Carmen | 63.3 (221) | $1,376 |
| Canada | Usually up to 6 months, set at the border | Montréal | 70.3 (55) | $2,293 |
| Costa Rica | Up to 180 days, set at the border, not extendable | San José | 61.8 (244) | $1,479 |
| Armenia | Up to 180 days a year | Yerevan | 61.3 (256) | No open figure yet |
| Barbados | Up to 6 months | Bridgetown | 75.1 (8) | No open figure yet |
The table shows the longest visa-free stays we could confirm for a US passport, with the top-scoring Nostos city in each country; stay rules come from the official sources named in this article (checked 7 October 2026), and scores and costs from Nostos dataset 2026.10.4 (city-level costs dated July to September 2026).
A few notes on the table. Barbados scores highest, but Nostos has no open cost-of-living figure for it yet, and the six-month allowance comes from a Barbados foreign ministry list dated August 2022, so check it again before you go. Kutaisi edges out Tbilisi on score and is cheaper; Georgia's capital scores 62.4 and costs about $1,094 a month. Albania's best city is the coastal town of Durrës, ahead of Tirana (63.9, $1,198).
Peru is a near miss. Nostos's passport data lists 180 days, but the US Embassy in Lima says the card you get on arrival usually states 90 days and extensions are not available. Plan on 90 unless your card says otherwise. We left Panama, Tunisia and El Salvador out of the table because we could not confirm their long allowances on an official page today.
What are the 90-day countries, and how does the Schengen 90/180 rule change the math?
Most visa-free destinations give Americans 90 days per visit: Japan, Taiwan and Argentina each confirm 90 days on official pages. Europe is different, because 29 countries share one 90-day allowance.
The European Commission explains the rule plainly: in the Schengen area you may stay "a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period". The area has 29 members: 25 EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Bulgaria and Romania were the last to join, on 1 January 2025. Ireland and Cyprus are in the EU but outside Schengen, so they run their own clocks.
The 180 days roll. On any given day, look back 180 days and count every day you spent anywhere in Schengen. Here is what that means in practice:
- Arrive in Lisbon on 1 January 2026 and stay until 31 March. That is exactly 90 days.
- You cannot re-enter any Schengen country until 30 June, when the earliest of those days start to drop out of the window.
- A trip from Lisbon to Barcelona to Budapest is one stay, not three.
The usual fix is to alternate. Spend 90 days in Schengen, then move to a country outside it. Albania and Georgia work well for this because of their year-long allowances, though Georgia now requires a work permit if you work while you are there. Within Nostos, the best-scoring places just outside Schengen include Budva and Kotor in Montenegro (64.4 and 64.1, both about $1,250 a month), Chișinău in Moldova (64.8, $990) and Belgrade (61.3, $833). Each of those gives 90 days on Nostos's passport data, which comes from the Passport Index dataset (last updated January 2025).
Asia has strong 90-day options too. Taipei scores 73.1 at $1,719 a month, and Fukuoka scores 69.2 at $1,433 with a measured median download speed of 81.9 Mbps. The Top 10 visa-free cities for a US passport ranks every 90-day-plus option by score.
What happened to Thailand? On 15 September 2026, Thailand withdrew the 60-day visa exemption and replaced it with 30 days for tourism. The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles confirms the 30-day rule for US citizens, and the Thai embassy in London says the exemption can be used only twice per calendar year. Nostos's passport data predates this change and may still show 60 days, so use 30. Remote workers who want longer should read the Thailand DTV visa guide, which allows up to 180 days per entry.
Can you work remotely on a visa-free stay?
Usually not officially. A visa-free entry is a visitor or tourist entry, and visitor status generally does not include permission to work. Whether remote work for a foreign employer counts as work varies by country, and this is not legal advice.
Mexico is explicit. Its entry form gives you the status of a visitor "sin permiso para realizar actividades remuneradas", meaning without permission to do paid activities. Thailand's 30-day exemption is described as being for tourism. Japan created a separate digital nomad status for remote workers: it needs income of at least 10 million yen a year and gives one six-month stay with no extension, according to Japan's Immigration Services Agency.
That is why digital nomad visas exist. If you plan to work from abroad for months, look at countries with a dedicated route:
- Albania has a unique permit for digital mobile workers, which you apply for online while you are already in the country. See the Albania digital nomad permit guide.
- Georgia has no nomad visa, and since 1 March 2026 the UK Foreign Office says foreign nationals need a work permit to work there, including remotely. The Georgia long-stay guide covers the one-year entry and the residence permit route after it.
- Costa Rica, Barbados, Thailand and Japan all run nomad schemes with income tests.
The Top 10 cities with a digital nomad visa lists the best-scoring options and each visa's minimum income. Staying around six months or more can also make you tax resident where you live; Nostos's guides put that line at 183 days in both Albania and Georgia. Tax rules depend on your situation, so confirm with a qualified tax adviser before you go.
What are the best visa-free bases for US nomads by cost and score?
For a long stay on a single entry, Durrës and Kutaisi are the strongest value picks, and Mexico gives the most choice. If score matters more than days, the 90-day countries win.
By length of stay:
- A full year, low cost: Kutaisi ($885 a month, score 63.0), Tbilisi ($1,094, 62.4) and Batumi ($833, 61.4) in Georgia; Durrës ($1,302, 66.4), Sarandë ($1,250, 64.4) and Tirana ($1,198, 63.9) in Albania.
- Up to six months: Playa del Carmen leads Mexico's 18 Nostos cities at 63.3 and $1,376 a month; Mérida is the cheapest strong option at $833 (61.5). Montréal scores 70.3 but costs $2,293.
- 90 days, highest scores: Taipei (73.1, $1,719), Budapest (73.1, $1,198, Schengen), Buenos Aires (69.9, $781) and Fukuoka (69.2, $1,433).
Two honest caveats about these numbers. Safety and healthcare scores in Nostos are country-level, so Kutaisi and Tbilisi share Georgia's figures. Internet speeds are M-Lab median measured speeds, not advertised plans; Kutaisi has no measured figure yet, while Tbilisi's median download is 19.5 Mbps.
If you need to work US hours, time zones matter as much as visas. The Top 10 cities for US remote workers keeps only cities with at least four hours of overlap with New York, and Montréal and Toronto make the list with their six-month allowance.

Frequently asked questions
Can I leave and come back to reset my visa-free days?
It depends on the country. Albania's one-year clock only restarts after you have spent at least 90 days outside the country, according to the US Embassy in Tirana. In Schengen there is nothing to reset: every day in the past 180 counts. Thailand's embassy in London says the 30-day exemption can be used only twice in a calendar year.
Do I need travel insurance for a long visa-free stay?
Georgia requires it. Since 1 January 2026 every tourist entering Georgia must show health and accident insurance with cover of at least 30,000 GEL, in Georgian or English, according to Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Elsewhere it is usually optional, but on a six-month stay it is worth having.
How long can US citizens stay in Japan?
Up to 90 days visa-free, according to Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Japan also has a separate digital nomad status for remote workers earning at least 10 million yen a year, which gives one six-month stay with no extension.
Is Mexico's 180 days guaranteed?
No. Mexico's entry form is valid for up to 180 days, but the US Embassy in Mexico says Mexican immigration decides how long you are authorised to stay when you arrive. Check the date written on your entry stamp or form before you plan anything around it.
