Dubai on a Budget: What It Actually Costs in 2026

Four days in Dubai costs most budget travellers between AED 875 and AED 3,275 per person, or roughly $240 to $890. The fixed costs are small and knowable: about AED 175 covering a transport card, a dozen metro journeys, four nights of tourist tax and the airport fee already sitting inside your ticket. Everything above that is accommodation, food and which attractions you decide to pay for.

Dubai's reputation is uniformly expensive. The reality is sharply split, and the split is the useful part: getting around and eating are genuinely cheap, while the landmark experiences are priced exactly as you would expect.

Is Dubai expensive for a budget traveller?

Not on the ground. Public transport, everyday food and a great deal of what there is to do cost less than in most European capitals. The expense comes from two places you largely control: where you stay, and how many of the marquee attractions you buy tickets for.

That is why the range above is so wide. A hostel bed and cafeteria meals put you near the bottom of it. A mid-range hotel in Downtown with two landmark tickets puts you near the top. Neither is more authentically Dubai than the other.

The parts that can be priced exactly are all at the cheap end, and they are the same for everyone.

What does getting around Dubai cost in 2026?

A single metro journey costs AED 3 for one zone, AED 5 for two, and AED 7.50 for anything longer, using a Silver Nol card. The card costs AED 25 and comes loaded with AED 19 of travel credit, so the card itself is really AED 6. None of these fares rose in 2026.

The Red Ticket is a disposable paper ticket for occasional trips and costs about a dirham more every time you touch in. Over a four-day visit that difference outweighs the AED 6 net cost of the Silver card several times over. There is also a Gold card at the same AED 25, but it charges double the Silver fare in exchange for a quieter cabin.

One clarification worth making, because it circulates as a rumour: a Dubai government resolution issued in February 2026 covering public transport dealt with the fines and violations schedule, not passenger fares. Metro fares did not go up.

How much is the Dubai tourist tax?

The Tourism Dirham is AED 10 per night at a 3-star hotel, AED 15 at a 4-star and AED 20 at a 5-star, with the full range across all categories running AED 7 to 20. It is charged per room per night, not per person, and it stops after 30 consecutive nights.

The per-room detail matters more than it sounds. Two people sharing a 3-star room pay AED 10 between them, not AED 10 each. That is a different model from many European cities, where the tax is levied per guest. Four nights in a 3-star room therefore costs AED 40 in total, however many of you are in it.

Your hotel collects it on behalf of the government and shows it separately on the invoice, so it will not appear in the rate you were quoted when booking.

Two other charges exist and are both unchanged for 2026: a 7% municipality fee on hotel sales, and 5% VAT. Neither is a tourism-specific surcharge, and both are normally folded into the price you see.

What will you actually spend per day?

Budget roughly AED 220 to 820 per person per day including accommodation, or about AED 120 to 380 once the bed is paid for. Transport, the tourist tax and the airport fee come to under AED 45 a day between them, whatever else you do.

The careful column is not deprivation. Dubai has genuinely inexpensive food in the older districts, free public beaches, and a lot of walking that costs nothing. The comfortable column assumes a hotel with a pool and a couple of paid experiences.

Only three rows move. Everything else is the same for every visitor.

What costs catch visitors out?

Three things. A fee inside your airfare that changed this year, a taxi from the airport that has no published fixed price, and the assumption that the tourist tax works the way it does in Europe.

The airport fee. Dubai's passenger facility fee rose from AED 45 to AED 50 on 31 March 2026. It applies to passengers departing the UAE from a Dubai airport, including most transit passengers, and airlines collect it inside the ticket price. You do not pay it at the airport, and it is not an arrival tax. Children under two, operating crew and same-flight-number transit passengers are exempt.

The airport taxi. There is no official fixed fare from the airport to Downtown Dubai. What is published is the meter: AED 20 to start in a standard taxi, AED 2.62 per kilometre, AED 0.50 per minute waiting, plus Salik road tolls where they apply. Worked through, that comes to roughly AED 55 to 65 to Downtown before any significant traffic, but that is a calculation from the published meter rather than a quoted price. The metro reaches the city for a few dirhams instead.
