Key Takeaways
- Eastern Canada gives a full 9-hour overlap with New York all year. Montréal and Toronto keep the same clock as the East Coast, so a 9am to 6pm day lines up hour for hour. Bridgetown, Barbados matches until 1 November, then gives 8 hours.
- Latin America covers most of the day on both coasts. Mexico City, Bogotá, Lima and Panama City give 7 to 9 hours with New York and 6 to 8 with Los Angeles, depending on the season.
- The Canary Islands and Madeira give 4 hours, the same as Lisbon. Only the Azores add a fifth hour with New York, and nowhere in Europe gives more than 2 with Los Angeles.
- For Pacific hours, the shortlist is short. Until 1 November, four cities outside the US match Los Angeles all day: Vancouver, Victoria, Mazatlán and La Paz. From 1 November all four sit 1 hour ahead, which still leaves 8 hours.
- A tourist entry is not a work permit. Where you may work for a US employer is decided by the destination's immigration and tax rules; nomad visas like Barbados's Welcome Stamp exist for exactly this.
The best places to work remotely on US hours are the ones that share the clock: Montréal and Toronto match New York all day, all year (Barbados until 1 November), Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Panama give 6 to 9 hours with each coast depending on the season, and Vancouver and Mazatlán match Los Angeles until 1 November and give 8 hours after that. Europe's Atlantic edge, including the Canary Islands and Madeira, gives just 4 hours with New York. We measured all 379 cities outside the US in Nostos, Navoy's free city chooser, by how much of a normal working day overlaps the US.
Most lists of time-zone-friendly places stop at "Latin America" and never say how many hours you actually get. Below are the numbers, city by city, with the cost and the flights home. When you have a shortlist, you can plan the trip with Navoy.
How many hours of overlap do you need with a US team?
Four hours is a workable minimum, and seven or more feels like being in the office. Nostos uses four hours as the cut-off for its Top 10 cities for US remote workers: at least 4 hours of a 9am to 6pm local day must fall inside 9am to 6pm in New York.
The measure is simple. Nostos takes a normal 9-to-6 day where you live and counts the hours that are also 9-to-6 in New York (Eastern time) and in Los Angeles (Pacific time). Same clock gives 9 hours. Five hours ahead, like Lisbon, gives 4. Eight hours ahead gives 1.
With 4 hours, your morning is your own and your afternoon belongs to meetings. That suits people who mostly work alone and join a daily stand-up. With 7 or 8 hours, you can answer a message within minutes for almost the whole US day, which suits support, sales and anyone whose manager expects fast replies.
By our count with Nostos data on 7 October 2026, 108 of the 379 cities outside the US give at least 4 hours with New York, and 70 give at least 4 hours with Los Angeles. Eight give the full 9 hours with New York.
You can always shift your own day. Working noon to 9pm in Lisbon covers 7am to 4pm in New York. The figures here assume you keep normal local hours, because that is what most people can sustain for months.
Best cities for Eastern-time hours
Eastern Canada gives the full 9 hours with New York all year, and Barbados does until 1 November; Latin America gives 7 or 8 today for much less money. Here are the strongest options by Nostos overall score, which blends nine factors from cost to safety under equal weights (0 to 100).
| City | Overlap with New York | Overlap with Los Angeles | Monthly cost | US airports nonstop | Nostos score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bridgetown, Barbados | 9h | 6h | no data | 8 | 75.1 |
| Montréal, Canada | 9h | 6h | $2,293 | 34 | 70.3 |
| Buenos Aires, Argentina | 8h | 5h | $781 | see note | 69.9 |
| Toronto, Canada | 9h | 6h | $2,969 | 46 | 69.5 |
| Montevideo, Uruguay | 8h | 5h | $1,582 | 1 | 68.1 |
| Lima, Peru | 8h | 7h | $1,198 | 7 | 63.5 |
| Playa del Carmen, Mexico | 8h | 7h | $1,376 | 47 | 63.3 |
| Bogotá, Colombia | 8h | 7h | $833 | 13 | 61.4 |
| Panama City, Panama | 8h | 7h | $1,742 | 20 | 60.5 |
The table shows that full Eastern overlap costs Canadian prices, while South America and the Caribbean coast of Mexico keep 8 hours at roughly half the cost. Source: Nostos city pages, dataset 2026.10.4, overlap as of 7 October 2026; monthly cost is for one person including a one-bedroom flat outside the centre.
Bridgetown is the highest-scoring city in the Nostos dataset with a full East Coast day, at 75.1, but Nostos has no open cost-of-living figure for it yet, so budget carefully. Montréal is the value pick among the full-overlap cities, nearly $700 a month cheaper than Toronto.
Buenos Aires is the cheapest strong city on the list at $781 a month, and it leads the Top 10 cities in Latin America. The catch is the connection: its measured median download speed is 16.3 Mbps, against 87.1 Mbps in Montevideo across the river. If you live on video calls, that gap matters more than the rent. The Buenos Aires flight count on Nostos still comes from an older OpenFlights snapshot, so we leave it out here.
The clocks also move. The US ends daylight saving time on the first Sunday of November (1 November 2026), under 15 U.S. Code § 260a. When we re-ran the same calculation for 15 January 2027, after that change, Bogotá, Lima, Panama City and Playa del Carmen moved from 8 hours to the full 9, while Buenos Aires and Montevideo dropped to 7 and Bridgetown to 8. Montréal and Toronto stay at 9 all year. British Columbia no longer changes its clocks: it stays on UTC-7 from 1 November 2026, so Vancouver and Victoria move 1 hour ahead of Los Angeles each winter, according to the BC government.
Best cities for Pacific-time hours
Until 1 November, four cities outside the US match Los Angeles all day: Vancouver, Victoria, Mazatlán and La Paz in Baja California Sur. From 1 November all four sit 1 hour ahead of Los Angeles, which still leaves 8 hours. Mexico and Central America add a long list of 8-hour options.
| City | Overlap with Los Angeles | Overlap with New York | Monthly cost | Nostos score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vancouver, Canada | 9h | 6h | $3,084 | 68.1 |
| Victoria, Canada | 9h | 6h | $2,850* | 68 |
| Mazatlán, Mexico | 9h | 6h | $1,400* | 62.1 |
| Calgary, Canada | 8h | 7h | $2,969 | 64.9 |
| San José, Costa Rica | 8h | 7h | $1,479 | 61.8 |
| Mérida, Mexico | 8h | 7h | $833 | 61.5 |
| Mexico City, Mexico | 8h | 7h | $1,318 | 56 |
Pacific-hours workers trade money for overlap: Vancouver gives the full day until 1 November, then 8 hours, for $3,084, while Mérida gives 8 hours for $833. Source: Nostos city pages, dataset 2026.10.4, overlap as of 7 October 2026; * marks a country-level cost estimate.
Vancouver is the best-connected choice, with 30 US airports flying there nonstop. From 1 November it, Victoria, Mazatlán and La Paz all sit 1 hour ahead of Los Angeles, because British Columbia now stays on UTC-7 all year, which still leaves 8 hours of overlap.
Central Mexico is the middle ground. Mexico City gives 8 hours with Los Angeles and 7 with New York (7 and 8 in winter), so a bicoastal team can reach you all day. It scores only 56 overall, held back by its climate (25) and safety (37) scores, and Guadalajara (61.4, $1,009 a month) is the cheaper, higher-scoring alternative in the same time zone.
How much overlap with New York do the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores give?
Four hours for the Canary Islands and Madeira, the same as Lisbon and London, and five for the Azores. Being further west in the Atlantic does not help unless the islands also keep an earlier clock, and only the Azores do.
The islands score very well overall. Santa Cruz de Tenerife reaches 77.5, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 77.3, Funchal on Madeira 77.1 and Ponta Delgada in the Azores 76.5. They do not appear in the Top 10 for US remote workers because Nostos ranks cities with a city-level price first, and all four are priced from national estimates ($2,200 a month for the Spanish islands, $2,000 for the Portuguese ones). That is why Faro, Lisbon and Porto lead that list instead.
| Place | Overlap with New York | Overlap with Los Angeles |
|---|---|---|
| Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura) | 4h | 1h |
| Madeira (Funchal) | 4h | 1h |
| Azores (Ponta Delgada) | 5h | 2h |
| Lisbon, Porto, Faro | 4h | 1h |
The table shows that the Atlantic islands give East Coast workers the same window as mainland Portugal, with the Azores one hour better. Source: Nostos city pages and time-zone data, dataset 2026.10.4, as of 7 October 2026.
For a week each autumn the gap narrows. The EU ends summer time on the last Sunday of October (25 October 2026), under Directive 2000/84/EC, a week before the US does, so for that week Lisbon and the Canaries are 4 hours ahead of New York and share 5 hours. For a West Coast team, none of these places work on normal hours.
Which cities have nonstop flights home to the US?
Mexico's Caribbean coast and Canada are the easiest to fly home from. Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancún all use Cancún airport, which 47 US airports serve nonstop, according to the Top 10 cities with nonstop flights from the US.
Toronto follows with 46 US airports, then Montréal (34), London (33), Calgary (32) and Vancouver (30). Puebla and Mexico City share 27. The list counts only cities outside the US, and Nostos finds 160 such cities with at least one nonstop US link, counted from each airport's destination tables on Wikipedia.
The Atlantic islands are the weak spot. Ponta Delgada has nonstop links with 3 US airports and Funchal with 1, while Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife show none, so a trip home usually means a change in Lisbon, Madrid or another hub. If you expect to fly back for family or a quarterly offsite, that is worth weighing against the scores.
Can you work for a US company while living abroad?
It depends on where you live, not on where your employer is. The destination's immigration rules decide whether remote work is allowed on your status, and its tax rules decide whether you owe tax there. Several countries created digital nomad visas for exactly this situation. This is general information, not legal advice.
A tourist entry is usually not a work permit. Mexico is the clearest example for Americans. Article 52 of Mexico's migration law (last reformed in January 2026) lets visitors stay up to 180 days, but "sin permiso para realizar actividades sujetas a una remuneración en el país" (without permission for paid activities in the country). The law does not spell out how that applies to remote work for a foreign employer, and Mexico has no dedicated nomad visa. People staying longer usually take temporary residency on economic solvency; the Mexico visa guide on Nostos lists the steps.
Nomad visas make the question simple. As of October 2026:
- Barbados Welcome Stamp. Lets you work remotely in Barbados for up to 12 months, for employers or clients outside Barbados. You need an annual income of at least $50,000, and the fee is $2,000, or $3,000 for a family, according to Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. See the Barbados visa guide.
- Portugal D8 (digital nomad residence visa). Portugal's foreign ministry asks for average monthly income over the last three months of at least four times the monthly minimum wage. With the 2026 minimum wage at €920 (DGERT), that is €3,680 a month. The Portugal visa guide covers the documents. The same visa applies on Madeira and the Azores.
All Nostos visa guides are marked as not yet reviewed by a person, so check each figure against the official source the guide cites before you apply.
Tax follows you too. The IRS says US citizens living abroad are taxed on their worldwide income. For tax year 2026 you may be able to exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earned income, if you are a bona fide resident abroad for a full tax year or are physically outside the US for at least 330 full days in 12 consecutive months. Your new country may also tax you once you count as resident there. Confirm your own position with a qualified tax adviser before you move.
Finally, ask your employer. Many companies limit where staff can work from, because an employee abroad can create payroll and tax duties for the company. Getting a written yes before you book saves an awkward conversation later. When it is settled, compare flights and stays with Navoy for your first month.

Frequently asked questions
Which countries are in the same time zone as the US East Coast?
In the Nostos data, eight cities outside the US share New York's working day in full as of 7 October 2026: Montréal, Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City in Canada, Bridgetown in Barbados, and Cabarete, Las Terrenas and Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. In January, when the US is on standard time, Canada stays in step and Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Panama and Mexico's Caribbean coast line up with New York hour for hour, while Barbados and the Dominican Republic move one hour ahead.
Can I work remotely from Mexico for a US company?
Mexico has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Its migration law gives visitors up to 180 days but without permission to carry out paid activities in the country, and it does not spell out how that applies to work for a foreign employer. People who stay longer usually apply for temporary residency on economic solvency at a Mexican consulate; the Nostos Mexico visa guide lists the steps, and a Mexican immigration lawyer can tell you how the rules apply to your job.
Is working from Portugal on US hours realistic?
For an East Coast team, yes, if most meetings fit into the afternoon. A 9am to 6pm day in Lisbon, Porto or Faro shares 4 hours with New York, from 9am to 1pm Eastern. For a West Coast team it is hard: the shared window is 1 hour, so you would need to shift your day into the evening.
Do US citizens pay tax while living abroad?
Yes. The IRS says US citizens living abroad are taxed on their worldwide income. You may be able to exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earned income for tax year 2026 if you pass the bona fide residence test or are abroad for 330 full days in 12 months. Your destination can tax you too, so confirm your position with a qualified tax adviser.
