Christmas Market Food Prices 2026: The Deposit Nobody Mentions

No European Christmas market has published its 2026 prices. Every price table you can find right now describes the 2025 season, and some of it is older than that. What can be said with confidence is the structure of what you pay: a cup of Glühwein, plus a refundable deposit of €3.50 to €5.00 on the mug itself. That deposit is the part most guides leave out, and it is the part that makes your first round feel twice as expensive as you expected.

What is the mug deposit at a Christmas market?

German and Austrian markets serve Glühwein in a real ceramic mug and charge a deposit, called Pfand, on top of the drink price. You get the deposit back in cash when you return the mug. In the 2025 season Dresden's Striezelmarkt charged a uniform €5.00 and Cologne's Altstadt market charged €3.50, with €1.00 on a shot glass.

The deposit is not a fee. It is a returnable holding charge that exists so the mugs come back, and almost every market runs the system. You hand over the mug at any stall belonging to the same market, and you get your coins back.

Two practical consequences follow. First, your opening round costs far more than the menu suggests: two Glühwein at Dresden's 2025 prices meant about €10 of drink and €10 of deposit, so €20 left your pocket for €10 of wine. Second, if you want to keep the mug as a souvenir, you simply do not return it. The deposit becomes the purchase price, which is why markets set it near what the mug is worth.

Vienna is the gap worth naming. The €5 deposit figure that circulates for the Rathausplatz market traces back to a report published in November 2023, describing the 2023 season. It may still be right. It is four seasons old, so we are not going to print it as though it were current.

What did food and Glühwein cost in 2025?

In the 2025 season, Glühwein ran roughly €4.50 to €5.60 a cup at the major German markets, and hot food ran €5.00 to €6.50 a portion. Dresden charged €5.00 for a standard cup and €4.50 at stalls on the edge of the market. Cologne charged €5.00 for 0.2 litres and €5.60 for 0.3 litres.

Every figure in this section describes the 2025 season. None of it has been confirmed for 2026.

Dresden's price list is the most interesting of these, because it shows the variation within a single market. The same drink cost €5.00 in the centre, €4.50 at the edges, and €2.80 in a paper cup with no mug and therefore no deposit. If you want the cheapest possible Glühwein at a German market, the paper cup at a peripheral stall is it.

Why will 2026 cost more?

Germany's statutory minimum wage rose from €12.82 to €13.90 an hour on 1 January 2026, an increase of 8.4%. A second step to €14.60 is already enacted for 1 January 2027. Christmas markets run on seasonal hourly staff, so a wage rise of this size lands directly on the cost of serving a cup.

This is not a forecast. The increase happened more than eight months ago, and it is written into law. The ordinance is MiLoV5, promulgated on 5 November 2025 and published in the Bundesgesetzblatt on 7 November 2025. Its text sets both steps at once:

Cumulatively that is a 13.9% rise in the statutory hourly wage across two years, and the second step lands about three weeks after the 2026 markets close.

What we are not going to do is turn that into a predicted Glühwein price. Labour is one input among several, stallholders set their own prices, and a wage rise does not translate into a proportional price rise. The honest statement is that the direction is upward and the reason is documented. Anyone quoting you a specific 2026 figure right now is guessing.

Which market controls its prices?

Budapest is the outlier. Its main Advent markets operate an enforced fixed-price menu, set at 1,600 HUF in the 2025 season, and roughly 70% of food prices were held flat against the previous year. Overall prices at the market rose about 1.5%.

This is unusual and almost entirely uncovered in English-language guides. Most European markets let stallholders price freely, which is why Glühwein varies by €1 within a few hundred metres at Dresden. Budapest instead requires participating stalls to offer a set dish at a capped price, so there is a guaranteed floor option regardless of which stall you walk up to.

For the 2025 season, forralt bor at the Bazilika and Vörösmarty tér markets ran 1,500 HUF, lángos 2,400 HUF, and lángos with cheese and sour cream 3,200 HUF.

When do the 2026 markets open?

Vienna opens first, on 13 November 2026. Most German markets open in the last week of November, and the large German markets close on 24 December rather than running to the new year. Brussels and Prague continue into January.

Strasbourg has not published confirmed 2026 dates. Several ranges circulate and they disagree with each other, and the market's own website is currently unreachable behind an expired security certificate. How do you budget for a market evening?

Carry more cash than the drink prices suggest, because the deposit doubles your first transaction. Budget for the deposit separately from the drink, and remember it comes back at the end of the night if you return the mugs.

A practical way to think about it, using Dresden's 2025 figures as the illustration:

• Two people, two drinks each. Four cups at €5.00 is €20 of Glühwein.
• Plus deposits. Four mugs at €5.00 is another €20, refundable.
• So €40 leaves your pocket and €20 comes back when you hand in the mugs.
• Food on top. A portion of hot food ran €5.00 to €6.50 at Cologne in the same season.

The deposit is why people consistently report markets feeling more expensive than they expected. The money is not gone, but it leaves your wallet in the first ten minutes and returns at the end.

Two other notes worth carrying. Many German markets still prefer cash, so a card is not a guaranteed fallback for a €5 refund. And if you are hopping between markets in different cities, deposits are not transferable: a Dresden mug is refunded at Dresden, not at Nuremberg.

If you are building a trip around two or three markets, the dates matter more than the prices, because the price differences between markets are small and the date differences are not. The first week of December is the only window when every confirmed market above is open simultaneously.
