Key Takeaways

  • Strasbourg has not published its 2026 dates. On 2 October 2026 the city's official Christmas site says the opening dates "will be announced here once validated".
  • The last edition ran 26 November to 24 December 2025, chalets open daily 11:30 to 21:00, closing at 18:00 on Christmas Eve.
  • Hotels don't wait for the announcement. By mid-September 2025, large hotels were already 36% booked for the market, and occupancy over the period came close to 90%, according to the city's own review.
  • Walking the markets costs nothing; every drink carries a €1 cup deposit. The city publishes no mulled wine price, so treat any figure you read as unofficial.
  • Book a refundable room now for a weekend in early December, then lock it in once the city confirms the dates.

Strasbourg has not announced its 2026 Christmas market dates yet. The city's official site says they will be published once validated. The 2025 market ran from 26 November to 24 December, and the rooms went early: large hotels were 36% booked by mid-September 2025 and the period ran close to 90% full.

We built this trip in Navoy: a 3-day Strasbourg Christmas market plan, 4 to 6 December.

When is the Strasbourg Christmas market 2026?

Not officially known yet. The City of Strasbourg, which sets the dates each year, says on its Christmas site that the 2026 opening dates will be published once validated. The last edition opened on Wednesday 26 November 2025 at 14:00 and closed on Wednesday 24 December at 18:00.

That is the honest position on 2 October 2026. Plenty of pages already print 2026 dates, and they disagree with each other. None of them comes from the city.

Here is what the official sources do say:

2025 edition (official)2026 edition
OpeningWed 26 November, from 14:00Not announced
ClosingWed 24 December, 18:00Not announced
Chalet hours11:30 to 21:00 dailyNot announced
Christmas EveChalets close at 18:00Not announced
Illuminations21 November 2025 to 4 January 2026Not announced
Markets8 across the historic centreNot announced

If 2026 follows recent years, the opening is predictable. In both 2024 and 2025 the market opened on the Wednesday before the first Sunday of Advent. The closing date is less fixed: 24 December in 2025, but 27 December in 2024. The first Sunday of Advent in 2026 falls on 29 November, so the same pattern would mean an opening around Wednesday 25 November. That is a pattern, not a date. Don't book anything non-refundable on it.

What you can rely on: the first two weeks of December sit inside the market in every recent edition. Plan around those, keep the edges flexible, and check the city's site once it announces.

How fast do Strasbourg hotels fill for the Christmas market?

Fast, and well before anyone knows the dates. The city's review of the 2025 edition, using tourism office data, says large hotels were 36% booked by mid-September, and occupancy across the market period came close to 90%. Five-star hotels in particular took a very high number of bookings.

This is the number most guides leave out, and it changes the order you plan in. The 2026 dates are still unpublished in October. Last year, by mid-September, a third of the big hotels' rooms for the season were already taken.

The crowd behind those bookings is large. The city counted about 3.05 million visitors in 2025, against 3.4 million in 2024, and its review notes more visitors than usual from Spain, the US, Japan, China and Turkey.

The practical move is simple: book a refundable room for your weekend now, while there is still choice, and confirm it once the dates are out. Check what's left for your night: Strasbourg hotels with live prices.

How much more do hotels cost during the Strasbourg Christmas market?

Four to ten times a November Saturday, depending on the room. When we searched Strasbourg on Navoy on 2 October 2026, the cheapest room for two on Saturday 5 December was $252, against $47 on Saturday 14 November, before any likely market opening. The median of the 12 cheapest rooms was $534 versus $54.

Room for 2 adults, 1 nightSat 5 Dec 2026Sat 14 Nov 2026Difference
Cheapest room available$252$475.4x
Median of the 12 cheapest$534$549.9x
Median of 12 top-rated picks$625$1584.0x

This is the biggest event premium of any city we checked for our winter guides. It fits the city's own figure that large hotels were already 36% booked by mid-September last year: the budget rooms for December weekends are going before the market dates are even announced.

How we measured: live Navoy hotel search, one room, two adults, one night, prices in US dollars including taxes and fees as shown, both nights checked the same day. Prices move daily, so treat these as a snapshot, not a quote.

What does the Strasbourg Christmas market cost once you're there?

The markets are on public squares and streets, so there is no ticket to walk them. The one official price at the stalls is the €1 deposit on every drink's reusable cup, refunded at any drinks stall. The city publishes no price for mulled wine or food, so any figure you read is unofficial.

Here are the costs the city itself states, from its 2025 edition:

ItemOfficial 2025 figureWhat to know
Entry to the marketsNo ticketOpen squares and streets in the Grande Île
Reusable drinks cup€1 depositReturn it to any drinks stall for the €1, or drop it at a charity point and the €1 goes to a Strasbourg charity
Park-and-ride (P+R)From €4.20 per dayIncludes a return tram ticket for everyone in the car
72-hour tram ticket€10.20 (CTS fare, plus €0.20 for the card on first purchase)Unlimited trips in the Eurométropole and to Kehl, for one person
Mulled wine, foodNot publishedNo official price list

The cup system is worth knowing in advance: a round of four drinks means €4 in deposits on top of the drinks. In 2025 visitors donated 6,560 cups at the collection points, and the city says €7,000 in donations will go to two neighbourhood food charities.

For what a mug of mulled wine actually costs at the big markets that do publish prices, our Christmas market food prices for 2026 compares them market by market.

Where are the 8 Strasbourg Christmas markets?

The city lists eight markets, all inside the historic centre and a short walk apart. The oldest is the Christkindelsmärik on Place Broglie, which the city dates to 1570. The city counts about 300 exhibitors, in 314 structures on 12 sites across the centre.

The Carré d'OrPlace du Temple Neuf

The OFF MarketPlace Grimmeissen

A few details that help on the ground.

The 1570 market lasted three days. According to the city's own history, the Christkindelsmärik replaced an older Saint Nicholas market in 1570 and ran only on the three days before Christmas. The 2025 edition ran 29 days. The city calls it one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe and, for a long time, the only one in France. It has been on Place Broglie since the 1870s.

Place Kléber is the meeting point. The Grand Sapin, the giant tree, stands here, with the Village du Partage at its foot: 110 charities in 14 chalets in 2025. One of the two official information chalets is here too.

Square Louise Weiss is the family stop. The Advent Village in Petite France runs free storytelling, workshops and concerts for children.

The OFF Market is the alternative. It sits in shipping containers on Place Grimmeissen and gathers social and solidarity economy organisations: vintage, ethical gifts, local organic food.

When is the best time to visit the Strasbourg Christmas market?

Monday and Tuesday mornings. The city's own advice is that Mondays, Tuesdays and mornings are the quietest, while Wednesday afternoons, Friday evenings and weekends are the busiest. If you can only do a weekend, arrive when the chalets open at 11:30 and save the evening for the lights.

A few timing rules from the 2025 edition:

  • Chalets open 11:30 to 21:00 every day. Opening day starts at 14:00.
  • Christmas Eve closes at 18:00, so stallholders can celebrate. Don't plan a long evening on 24 December.
  • The lights outlast the market. In 2025 the illuminations ran from 21 November to 4 January and switched off at midnight (2:00 on 24 and 31 December), so in 2025 a trip between Christmas and New Year still got the decorated city, without the chalets. The market's closing date varies (27 December in 2024), so check the 2026 dates before planning around it.
  • Dogs are welcome on a lead, though the city suggests mornings or early in the week for them, away from the weekend crowds.

A long weekend in early December is the sweet spot for most visitors: firmly inside the market, before the final pre-Christmas rush. If you can add a Monday, do the busiest squares that morning.

How do you get to the Strasbourg Christmas market?

By plane to Strasbourg-Entzheim (SXB), 10 km from the centre, then an 8-minute TER train to the main station. From the station the first chalets are a 10-minute walk. The historic centre is fully pedestrian during the market, so leave the car outside.

The city's own logistics, from the 2025 edition:

  • Air: Strasbourg-Entzheim International Airport is linked to Strasbourg station by TER train in 8 minutes.
  • Train: from Strasbourg station, follow the marked walking route; trams A, C, D and F also stop near the markets.
  • Car: cars are banned from the Grande Île during market hours, and on-street and garage parking there is closed. Use one of the 12 park-and-ride sites, from €4.20 a day including the tram.
  • On foot: all 21 bridges into the centre stay open to pedestrians around the clock. Large bags are checked at the entrances between 11:30 and 21:00, so drop luggage at the hotel first.

Search flights to SXB: flights to Strasbourg, 4 to 6 December.

Where should you stay for the Strasbourg Christmas market?

Inside or right beside the Grande Île if you want to walk everywhere, and near the main station if you are arriving by train or plane. The centre is pedestrian during the market, so a hotel there means walking your bags in, but every market is then a few minutes away.

How the three options compare:

  • Grande Île (historic centre): every market on your doorstep and the lights after dark. Cars can't reach it during market hours, and large bags are checked at the bridges, so travel light.
  • Station area: a 10-minute walk to the first chalets, and the 8-minute train link to the airport. The practical choice for a short trip.
  • Further out on the tram: more room and often more choice when the centre is full. The city's park-and-ride and tram network is built for exactly this during the market.

When does the Strasbourg Christmas market open in 2026?

The city had not announced it as of 2 October 2026. Its official site says the dates will be published once validated. If that pattern repeats, the 2026 opening would fall around 25 November, but that is not confirmed.

How long does the Strasbourg Christmas market last?

The 2025 edition ran 29 days, from 26 November to 24 December, with chalets open 11:30 to 21:00 daily. In 2025 it closed at 18:00 on Christmas Eve, so it was not open on Christmas Day or between Christmas and New Year, although the city's illuminations stayed on until 4 January. The closing date varies: the 2024 edition ran to 27 December.

Is the Strasbourg Christmas market free?

Yes, walking the markets is free: they are on public squares and streets, with no ticket. You pay for what you buy, and every drink is served in a reusable cup with a €1 deposit, refunded at any drinks stall. The city publishes no official price for mulled wine or food.

As early as you can, on a refundable rate. The city's 2025 review says large hotels were already 36% booked by mid-September, before the dates were announced, and occupancy over the market period came close to 90%. Five-star hotels were especially busy.
