Key Takeaways

  • The 7 best places to travel in October 2026: Crete, Seville, Marrakech, Petra, Cappadocia, Vermont and Cape Town.
  • October runs about 9°C (17°F) cooler than the hottest month across the six northern-hemisphere picks, on long-term averages. Seville drops from 35.7°C in July to 26.0°C.
  • Crete's sea is still about 23°C (73°F) in October, slightly warmer than in June.
  • Vermont came early this year. By 5 October 2026 most of the state was at peak colour, and 10 to 11 October looks like the last full peak weekend in the mountains.
  • Cape Town is the spring pick: 22°C (72°F) days and the peak of whale season in nearby Hermanus.

The best places to travel in October 2026 are Crete, Seville, Marrakech, Petra, Cappadocia, Vermont and Cape Town. Across the six northern picks, October averages about 9°C (17°F) cooler than the hottest month, so cities like Seville (26°C) and Marrakech (28.5°C) become walkable again, while Crete's sea holds about 23°C.

Every temperature below is a long-term October average (mostly 1991 to 2020 climate normals from national weather services), not a forecast. Check the week's forecast before you fly.

Why is October a good month to travel?

Because the heat breaks before the weather turns. In the six northern-hemisphere places on this list, the average October high sits between 6°C and 13°C below the hottest month of the year, and school summer holidays are over. Seas stay warm for weeks after the air cools, so Crete still swims like early summer.

The pattern is the same one that made September a strong month, pushed a little further. Inland cities that are punishing in July (Seville, Marrakech) settle into the high 20s. The sea lags behind the air, so the Aegean around Crete is still near 23°C. Further north, October trades heat for colour: Vermont's forests peak, and Cappadocia's crisp mornings suit the sunrise balloons. South of the equator, Cape Town is moving into spring.

Averages are 1991 to 2020 climate normals: AEMET (Seville), the Turkish State Meteorological Service (Nevşehir), NOAA (Burlington) and the WMO normals (Marrakech, Cape Town); Crete's air figures are the Hellenic National Meteorological Service normals as published in Heraklion's climate table, and its sea figure is a long-term average from Weather Atlas. *Petra's figures are a modelled estimate from Climate-Data.org, not an official station record, so treat them as approximate. Compiled 6 October 2026.

How much cooler is October than summer?

About 9°C (17°F) on average. We compared each northern pick's average October high with its hottest month: the drop runs from 6.3°C in Crete to 13.1°C in Vermont, and averages 9.3°C across the six. Seville and Cappadocia both lose about 10°C, which is the difference between hiding indoors and walking all afternoon.

Chart comparing each destination's average October high with its hottest month: Seville 26.0 vs 35.7°C, Marrakech 28.5 vs 37.7°C, Cappadocia 19.1 vs 29.4°C, Vermont 14.9 vs 28.0°C, Crete 24.0 vs 30.3°C, Petra about 24 vs 31°C, Cape Town 22.2 vs 27.3°C in February

How we worked it out: for each place we took the long-term average daily high for October and for its warmest month from the same climate table, then subtracted. Cape Town sits outside the average because its seasons run the other way: its October high is 5.1°C below February's peak and climbing.

1. Crete, Greece: why is the sea still warm in October?

Because water holds summer heat long after the air cools. Heraklion's sea averages 23.3°C (74°F) in October, slightly warmer than June's 23.0°C, while the average daytime high drops to 24.0°C (75°F) from 30.3°C in July. And the European school summer holidays are over.

October is the month to do Crete properly: swim in the morning, then walk the Palace of Knossos or the Old Town of Chania without the midday heat. The sea starts to cool in November (20.6°C on average), so the warm-water window closes with the month.

2. Seville, Spain: is Seville too hot in October?

No. October is when Seville becomes walkable again. The average high at Seville Airport is 26.0°C (79°F), against 35.7°C in July and 35.6°C in August, on the 1991 to 2020 normals of Spain's state weather agency, AEMET. That is almost 10°C cooler than midsummer.

In summer, sightseeing in Seville means early mornings and late evenings. In October you can do the Alcázar, the cathedral and the Plaza de España in the same afternoon, then eat outside after dark. It is a short, easy city break: most of the sights sit inside the old centre.

3. Marrakech, Morocco: what is Marrakech like in October?

Warm, dry days at an average of 28.5°C (83°F), down from 37.7°C in July at Marrakech Menara Airport, on NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals. That is still hot by European standards, but it is the first month since spring that the souks and gardens are comfortable at midday.

Spend the days in the medina and the evenings on a rooftop, when it cools down. October also works for a night or two in the Atlas Mountains or the desert, which are hard going in high summer.

4. Petra, Jordan: is October a good time to visit Petra?

Yes, it is one of the most comfortable months for the long walk in. Wadi Musa, the town at Petra's entrance, averages around 24°C (75°F) in October against about 31°C in August. Petra has no long-term official weather record we could find, so these are modelled estimates (Climate-Data.org).

The heat matters here more than in a city, because Petra is a walk: through the Siq to the Treasury, then on to the Monastery's long stair climb. Cooler days make a full day on foot realistic. Start early either way, and bring water.

  • Getting there: there is no airport at Petra. Fly into Queen Alia International near Amman (AMM) and drive south, or into King Hussein International in Aqaba (AQJ), which is closer. Search flights to Amman
  • Where to stay: hotels in Petra, ideally one night before and after so you can enter at opening time.

5. Cappadocia, Türkiye: can you still fly in a balloon in October?

Yes. Balloons fly in Cappadocia all year when the weather allows, and each morning a weather flag issued under the rules of Türkiye's civil aviation authority (SHGM) decides whether they may take off. October days are crisp, averaging 19.1°C (66°F) in Nevşehir, down from 29.4°C in August, per the Turkish State Meteorological Service.

Because a red or yellow flag grounds every balloon in the region, book your balloon for your first morning, so a cancellation leaves you another try. The rest of the day is for the valleys around Göreme, which are far better to hike at 19°C than in summer heat. Mornings are cold before sunrise, so pack a warm layer.

6. Vermont, USA: when is peak foliage in Vermont in 2026?

Now. The colour came early this year: by 5 October 2026 most of the state, including Stratton and Manchester in the south, was at peak, and 10 to 11 October looked like the last full peak weekend in the mountains. Lower valleys and the Lake Champlain shore hold colour a little longer.

In a typical year southern Vermont peaks around mid-October, later than the north. 2026 ran ahead of that: Vermont's state foresters reported the Northeast Kingdom at peak on 30 September, and southern Vermont's Deerfield Valley announced peak on 2 October. A strong cold front in the second week of October was forecast to speed up leaf drop at higher elevations. If you are going this year, go this week or next, aim for the valleys and the Champlain shore, and check a live foliage tracker the day before you drive.

October in Vermont is also cool: Burlington averages 14.9°C (59°F) by day, down from 28.0°C in July.

  • Getting there: Burlington International Airport (BTV) for northern and central Vermont. For the far south, Albany International (ALB) in New York state is a common alternative. Search flights to Burlington
  • Where to stay: compare hotels in Vermont (search Stowe, Woodstock or Manchester)

7. Cape Town, South Africa: why go to Cape Town in October?

Because it is spring there: Cape Town averages 22.2°C (72°F) in October, warming towards February's 27.3°C peak. October is also the peak of southern right whale season in Walker Bay, off Hermanus, about 120 km from the city. The season runs roughly June to November.

Spend a few days on Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula and the winelands, then drive along the coast to Hermanus, where whales can often be seen from the cliff path. One thing to know: the sea is cold on the Atlantic side of the peninsula all year, so October is a sightseeing trip, not a beach one.

Frequently asked questions

Where is it still warm in October?

Marrakech is the warmest pick on this list, averaging 28.5°C (83°F) by day, followed by Seville at 26.0°C (79°F) and Crete at 24.0°C (75°F). Crete is the only one where the sea is still warm, at about 23°C. Cape Town reaches 22.2°C as its spring gets going.

Is October cheaper than summer for travel?

Often, but it depends on the place. October falls after the European school summer holidays, which usually takes pressure off beach and city destinations. Event weeks and peak-foliage weekends, like Vermont's in early October, are the exception. Compare prices for your exact dates before you book.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in October?

In Crete, yes: the sea around Heraklion averages 23.3°C (74°F) in October, slightly warmer than in June. It cools to around 20.6°C in November. In Cape Town the Atlantic side stays cold all year, so plan for sightseeing rather than swimming there.

Is it too late for fall foliage in Vermont?

Not quite, but the 2026 window is short. Colour arrived early: by 5 October most of Vermont was at peak, and 10 to 11 October looked like the last full peak weekend in the mountains. Lower valleys and the Lake Champlain area hold colour a little longer. Check a live foliage tracker before you go.
