Key Takeaways
- The fireworks go off at 9pm and midnight on Thursday 31 December 2026. The 9pm show is the family one; the City of Sydney expects more than one million people around the harbor.
- 34 of the 48 official vantage points are free with no ticket. Together they hold about 184,000 people, by our count of the City's own capacity figures.
- The best free spots fill by mid-afternoon. Both sides of Circular Quay, Barangaroo Reserve and Hickson Road Reserve were full at 3:30pm in 2025.
- Most free ticketed spots are already gone. The Cahill Expressway ballot is exhausted and the National Parks sites are booked out; the Opera House forecourt releases 6,000 free tickets at 10am on 26 December.
- Cheap rooms barely move, good ones jump. In our check, the median top-rated room cost $850 on New Year's Eve against $151 on a January Thursday: 5.6 times as much.
Sydney's fireworks light the harbor at 9pm and midnight on Thursday 31 December 2026, and 34 of the 48 official vantage points are free with no ticket. The catch is time: the best free spots, around Circular Quay and Barangaroo, were full by 3:30pm in 2025. A well-rated hotel that night costs about 5.6 times a normal January Thursday.
We built this trip in Navoy: a 4-day Sydney New Year's Eve plan, 30 December to 2 January.
What time are the Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks in 2026?
Two shows: the Calling Country fireworks at 9pm, which the City of Sydney recommends for families with young children, and the main fireworks at midnight, launched from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and other landmarks. The official program starts at 7:30pm with a smoking ceremony on the harbor.
The 2026 running order, from the official site:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7:30pm | Smoking ceremony on the vessels Tribal Warrior, Mari Nawi and Wirawi |
| 8:30pm | Projections on the Harbour Bridge pylons and lighting effects |
| 8:45pm | Welcome to Country |
| 9:00pm | Calling Country fireworks |
| 9:15pm | Boats decorated with lights cross the harbor |
| Midnight | Main fireworks, with the soundtrack on KIIS 106.5 |
For scale, the 2025 edition used 9 tonnes of fireworks and 25,000 individual shots, fired along 7 km of harbor from Cockatoo Island to Point Piper. The midnight show ran 12 minutes and the 9pm show 8 minutes. The City has not published those figures for 2026 yet.
Sydney sees midnight early. With daylight saving, the city is on UTC+11, so its midnight is 8am on 31 December in New York and 1pm in London.
Where can you watch the Sydney fireworks for free?
At 34 of the 48 official vantage points, with no ticket or registration: first come, first served. They range from Darling Harbour (28,000 people) and Dawes Point under the bridge (32,000) to small parks for 100. The City's first-timer picks are Mrs Macquaries Point, Bennelong Lawn, Tarpeian Lawn, Dawes Point, Barangaroo and Observatory Hill.
We went through all 48 official listings. The 34 free sites hold about 184,000 people between them; the 14 sites that need a ticket hold about 48,300. That is our sum of the City's own per-site figures, not an official total, and it is a small share of the million-plus crowd the City expects. The rest watch from boats, private venues and homes around the harbor.
| Free vantage point | Holds | Opens | View |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mrs Macquaries Point (Royal Botanic Garden) | 10,000 | 10am | Bridge and Opera House |
| Tarpeian Lawn (Royal Botanic Garden) | 3,500 | 9:30am | Bridge and Opera House |
| Bennelong Lawn (Royal Botanic Garden) | 1,000 | 9am | Bridge and Opera House |
| Dawes Point (Tar-Ra) Park | 32,000 | 10am | Under the bridge, partial views |
| Barangaroo Reserve | 8,500 | 11am | Western face of the bridge |
| Observatory Hill Park | 4,500 | 2pm | Bridge and city skyline |
| Darling Harbour | 28,000 | 10am | Its own 9pm and midnight fireworks over Cockle Bay |
Two rules catch people out. Most vantage points do not allow re-entry, so once you are in, you stay until after midnight. And there is bag checking at the gates: no glass, and large bags are often refused.
How early do you need to arrive for a free spot?
By early afternoon for the famous views. The City's own pages say Circular Quay west (16,000 people), Circular Quay east (10,000), Barangaroo Reserve (8,500) and Hickson Road Reserve (2,800) all reached capacity at 3:30pm in 2025. Campbells Cove filled at 6pm and Dawes Point at 7:30pm. Full sites close.

Arrive at 3pm and you are on site for nine hours before the midnight show. The City's guide tells you to pack sunscreen, a hat, water, food, wet weather gear and a blanket, and to check capacity updates on the official site before you leave and on your way. Mrs Macquaries Point has no published fill time but holds 10,000 and opens at 10am, so arrive by late morning.
This is where your hotel decides your night. A room within walking distance means no ferry or train on the way in, and a short walk home after midnight instead of a station queue. Check what's left for your night: Sydney hotels with live prices.
Which Sydney New Year's Eve spots need a ticket, and are any left?
Few free tickets are left. The Cahill Expressway ballot is exhausted, and Bradleys Head, Strickland Estate and the Clark, Shark and Goat island sites are booked out. The big remaining chance is the Opera House forecourt: 6,000 free tickets released at 10am on 26 December. Paid options such as Taronga Zoo still have some tickets.
| Ticketed spot | Price | Status on 26 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Opera House forecourt | Free, 6 tickets per booking | Opens 10am on 26 December; entry 12pm to 3pm only |
| Cahill Expressway | Free, balloted | "Ballot allocations have been exhausted" |
| Bradleys Head, Strickland Estate | Free ticket | Booked out |
| Clark, Shark and Goat islands | Event free, ferry $34 (A$47.71) | Booked out |
| Cockatoo Island | Overnight accommodation only | Sold out |
| Taronga Zoo | From $88 (A$125, child) and $172 (A$245, adult) | Some areas selling fast, most sold out |
| Opera Gala Concert, Opera House | From $175 (A$249) plus a $7 (A$9.80) booking fee | On sale |
A detail worth knowing on the Opera House forecourt: its own page lists the release as "Friday 26 December 2026", but 26 December 2026 is a Saturday. Go by the date and time, 10am on 26 December, and be online early. Entry is only between noon and 3pm, so a forecourt ticket still means an afternoon on the harbor.
The Opera Gala's $350 (A$499) Midnight Party has fireworks views, but Opera Australia warns they are partially obstructed and may not include the bridge.
How much do Sydney hotels cost on New Year's Eve 2026?
The cheapest rooms barely move; the good ones jump. In Navoy's own check on book.navoy.io on 26 October 2026, the median of the top-rated picks for two was $850 on 31 December against $151 on Thursday 21 January: 5.6 times as much. The cheapest room was $81 against $76.
| Room for 2 adults, 1 night | Thu 31 Dec 2026 | Thu 21 Jan 2027 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cheapest room available | $81 | $76 | 1.1x |
| Median of the 14 cheapest | $156 | $97 | 1.6x |
| Median of the 14 top picks | $850 | $151 | 5.6x |
The budget end of Sydney is barely busier on New Year's Eve than on a quiet summer weeknight, which is not what most people expect. The premium sits in the well-rated hotels, the ones with harbor views or a short walk to the foreshore. That 5.6x jump was the biggest of the six New Year's Eve cities we checked; see New Year's Eve 2026: 6 cities compared on what a hotel night costs.
How we measured: Navoy's own check on book.navoy.io, 26 October 2026, 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, prices in US dollars as shown on the result cards. Both nights were checked the same day, and prices move daily, so treat them as a snapshot, not a quote.

Can you drink alcohol at the Sydney New Year's Eve vantage points?
At most free sites, no. Of the 34 free vantage points, 19 are alcohol-free, 10 allow you to bring your own and 5 sell alcohol but ban BYO, including the four Royal Botanic Garden lawns. Glass is banned almost everywhere. The City says most free vantage points are alcohol-free zones in 2026.
The free BYO sites are mostly parks on the inner west and lower north shore side, such as Birchgrove Park, Mort Bay Park, Pirrama Park and Elkington Park. Each official listing states its own rule, so check the one you pick. Food is allowed at most sites, and pets are not, except assistance animals.
How do you get around Sydney on New Year's Eve?
By public transport and on foot. Driving to the foreshore is not possible. Last year trains skipped Circular Quay from 3pm to midnight, harbor ferries stopped from around 5pm and the Harbour Bridge closed to traffic from 11pm to 1:30am; check the City's transport page for 2026. The City suggests heading home after 1am to avoid the worst crowds.
The changes that matter, from the official 2026 transport page:
- Trains: no stops at Circular Quay 3pm to midnight; use Wynyard, St James or Martin Place and walk. No trains stop at the two airport stations from 12:30am to 4:30am.
- Ferries: they start to fill from mid-afternoon. McMahons Point wharf closes at 10am, Milsons Point at 2pm.
- Metro: Barangaroo station for Barangaroo Reserve and Dawes Point; Victoria Cross for the North Sydney sites.
- Fares: not free. Tap on and off with an Opal card, a contactless card or a phone.
- Leaving: you will probably leave a different way than you came. Expect a long walk to a working station.
Flying in? Land before New Year's Eve, not on it, and remember the airport stations close for four hours after midnight. Search flights to SYD: flights to Sydney, 30 December to 2 January. For the ride from the airport to your hotel, book an airport transfer.
Where should you stay for Sydney New Year's Eve?
As close to your chosen vantage point as your budget allows. The Rocks and Circular Quay put you on foot from the bridge and Opera House views; North Sydney and Kirribilli face the city across the water; Darling Harbour and Pyrmont have their own fireworks. Each saves you the post-midnight crush.
- The Rocks and Circular Quay: walk to Dawes Point, Campbells Cove, Observatory Hill and both sides of the Quay. Roads here start closing from 6am on 31 December, so arrive with your bags the day before.
- North Sydney and Kirribilli: views back across to the bridge and Opera House, with Victoria Cross metro after midnight.
- Darling Harbour and Pyrmont: a free site for 28,000 people with its own 9pm and midnight fireworks over Cockle Bay, which the City suggests for families.
