Key Takeaways

  • The Strip itself is free. On New Year's Eve 2025 it closed to all cars by 8 p.m. and turned into a pedestrian party, with an eight-minute rooftop fireworks show at midnight. Clark County had not published its 2026 plan on 26 October 2026.
  • The budget rooms take the hit, not the good ones. On our 26 October check, the cheapest room on Thursday 31 December 2026 was $70 against $21 on Thursday 21 January 2027 (3.3x). Well-rated rooms rose only 1.2 times, $189 against $152.
  • Ten resorts fired fireworks for the last edition, plus 600 drones for the first time. The 2026 launch list is not announced yet.
  • Leave the backpack in the room. From 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. last year, backpacks, coolers, strollers, glass and any bag larger than 12 x 12 x 6 inches were banned on the Strip.
  • Check the total, not the card price. Federal rules make hotels show mandatory resort fees in the total, but taxes can come later, so the checkout figure is the one to compare.

The Las Vegas Strip closes to cars on New Year's Eve and becomes a free street party, with eight minutes of rooftop fireworks at midnight. The cost is the room: on our 26 October check the cheapest bed on 31 December 2026 was $70, against $21 on a January Thursday, while well-rated hotels rose only 1.2 times.

We built this trip in Navoy: a 4-day Las Vegas New Year's Eve plan, 30 December to 2 January.

What happens on the Las Vegas Strip on New Year's Eve?

Las Vegas Boulevard closes to traffic in the evening and fills with people on foot. For the 2025 edition, Clark County closed the Flamingo exits from Interstate 15 around 5:30 p.m., started closing the boulevard at 6:30 p.m. and had the Strip shut to all vehicles by 8 p.m. Visit Las Vegas says it typically reopens around 2 a.m.

Nobody sells tickets to the boulevard. You walk on, find a spot with a view of a launch roof and wait for midnight. The official name for the night is America's Party, and the edition that welcomed 2026 was its 25th, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).

Here is how last year's night ran. Officials announced that plan in the last days of December 2025, so expect the 2026 version around the same time.

How much more do Las Vegas hotels cost on New Year's Eve 2026?

The cheapest rooms triple and the good ones barely move. On book.navoy.io on 26 October, the cheapest room for two on Thursday 31 December 2026 was $70 against $21 on Thursday 21 January 2027 (3.3x). The median of the 14 cheapest rose from $56 to $115. Top picks rose only 1.2 times, from $152 to $189.

Navoy's own check on book.navoy.io, 26 October 2026, 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, prices in US dollars as shown on the result cards. "Top picks" is the median of the first 14 hotels under the default sort. Prices move daily, so treat this as a snapshot, not a quote.

Bar chart comparing Las Vegas hotel prices for 31 December 2026 and 21 January 2027: cheapest room, median of the 14 cheapest and median of the top picks
On New Year's Eve 2026 the cheapest Las Vegas room costs 3.3 times a January Thursday, while well-rated rooms cost only 1.2 times more. Navoy's own check on book.navoy.io, 26 October 2026, 2 adults, 1 room.

That pattern is the opposite of Sydney, where well-rated rooms rose 5.6 times on the same night while the cheapest barely moved. Our six-city New Year's Eve hotel comparison has the full table.

What it means for your booking:

  • Trading up costs less on New Year's Eve. In January, a top pick costs $131 more than the cheapest room. On 31 December the gap is $119.
  • The budget end is where the premium sits. If you were planning on a $21 room, budget for $70 or more, and check how far it is from the boulevard.
  • The card price is not the final price. We did not check resort fees hotel by hotel, so some of these cards may leave them out. Compare the total at checkout before you choose (more on that below).

Are resort fees included in the Las Vegas hotel price?

Resort fees should be in it. Since 12 May 2025 the Federal Trade Commission's fee rule says a required resort fee must be included in the total price a US hotel shows. Taxes and other government charges can still be left out of that total if they are disclosed before you pay, so compare the checkout figure.

The rule doesn't ban resort fees or cap them. It only stops a hotel from hiding a mandatory fee until the last screen. In Las Vegas that matters more than almost anywhere, because the fee is common on the Strip and it is charged per room, per night, whether you use the pool or not.

Two practical habits:

  • Compare totals, not nightly rates. Two hotels at $189 can end up far apart once the fee and the room tax are added.
  • Ask what the fee covers. Parking is often a separate charge on the Strip.

Our guide to hotel fees that weren't in the price you clicked goes through each charge and what it typically adds.

Which hotels launch the fireworks, and where should you watch?

For the edition that welcomed 2026, Fireworks by Grucci fired an eight-minute show at midnight from 10 rooftops: MGM Grand, ARIA, Planet Hollywood, Caesars Palace, Palms, Treasure Island, The Venetian, Fontainebleau, Resorts World and The STRAT. The 2026 launch list was not announced when we checked on 26 October.

The show also added something new last year: 600 LED drones, launched from the Las Vegas Event Plaza across from Wynn Las Vegas, the first drone show on a Las Vegas New Year's Eve according to the LVCVA. Sphere ran the official countdown on its outer screen.

Where to stand, from Visit Las Vegas, the city's official tourism site:

  • Find a 45-degree angle on one launch roof. Directly underneath a tower you see less, not more.
  • Height helps. Anywhere with a view above the launch buildings works, which is why locals often watch from further out in the valley.
  • Tune in for the soundtrack. Last year the music played on KOMP 92.3 and 97.1 The Point.
  • Downtown has its own show. Fremont Street ran a separate countdown party with a midnight fireworks display from the Plaza Hotel & Casino.

What can't you bring onto the Strip on New Year's Eve?

From 6 p.m. on 31 December to 6 a.m. on 1 January last year, Clark County banned glass bottles, metal containers, strollers, coolers, backpacks and any bag larger than 12 x 12 x 6 inches on the Strip. Local reports said downtown applied the same list, and minors under 18 needed a parent or guardian on both.

Plan around the rules before you leave the room:

  • Take a small bag or none. A standard backpack is banned outright, whatever its size.
  • Keep your room key on you. Visit Las Vegas warns that some hotels require a key to get back in between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.
  • Families with young children: with strollers banned, a hotel room with a view of a launch roof is the practical way to see the show.

How much do New Year's Eve parties in Las Vegas cost?

Watching from the boulevard costs nothing. Indoors, the LVCVA's list for the last edition ran from $26 for general admission at KAOS at Palms, through $99 and up at Ghostbar, to $400 a person at Chéri Rooftop with a midnight champagne toast. Prices for 31 December 2026 are not published yet.

Last year's headline DJs played the big clubs, from Tiësto at OMNIA to Steve Aoki at Hakkasan. Last year the LVCVA published its New Year's Eve lineup on 9 December, so expect the 2026 names around then. Book only through the venue or its official ticket seller.

How do you get to and around Las Vegas on New Year's Eve?

Fly into Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), which Visit Las Vegas puts 2 miles from Las Vegas Boulevard, and arrive by 30 December. On the night, leave the car: last year RTC buses were free from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., and the Monorail ran 43 hours straight.

The details from the 2025 edition:

  • Buses: RTC rides were free on all routes, including the Deuce on the Strip, from 6 p.m. on 31 December to 9 a.m. on 1 January, with some detours.
  • Monorail: it ran nonstop from 7 a.m. on 31 December to 2 a.m. on 2 January. A single ride for visitors was $6, and a 24-hour pass started at $13.45 as an eTicket.
  • Driving: Visit Las Vegas calls it not recommended. Parking lots fill early in the evening, and some stay shut until well after midnight.
  • Taxis: they can't be hailed on the street in Las Vegas. Pick one up at a hotel taxi line.

In 2026, New Year's Day falls on a Friday, so a Wednesday to Saturday trip gets you the party and a full day to recover.
