Key Takeaways

  • Watching the ball drop in Times Square is free and unticketed. The viewing pens open at 3pm on Thursday 31 December 2026, first come, first served, and the Ball starts its 60-second drop at 11:59pm. That is about nine hours on your feet.
  • There are no restrooms, no food vendors and no way back in. The organizer's own rules: all bags searched, no backpacks, chairs, umbrellas or alcohol, and if you leave your pen you lose the spot.
  • The "1 million people" figure has no official source. The organizer says "hundreds of thousands"; the NYPD has estimated 2 million; the one independent crowd scientist who checked says under 100,000 fit.
  • Indoor views are sold by the venue, from $1,250 a head without a view of the Ball at the Marriott Marquis party, up to $7,000 with one. Harbor cruises start around $368.
  • The hotel night is the real bill. We price Thursday 31 December against a normal Thursday in January below, and list the free Brooklyn fireworks and the neighborhoods a subway ride away.

Standing in Times Square on 31 December 2026 costs nothing: no tickets exist, pens open at 3pm and the Ball drops at 11:59pm, nine hours later, with no restrooms. The cheapest indoor party at a venue with a view is $1,250 a head, and that tier does not see the Ball. The real cost is the hotel night, priced below.

We built this trip in Navoy: a 4-day New York New Year's Eve plan, 30 December to 2 January.

Do you need tickets for the Times Square ball drop?

No. The Times Square Alliance, which produces the event, says the outdoor celebration is free and first come, first served. Tickets exist only for private parties at the hotels and restaurants around the square. Anyone selling a "Times Square ball drop ticket" is selling a party, a rooftop or, in cases the Alliance has flagged, nothing at all.

The organizer's FAQ warns that "Multiple Venue" or "All Access" passes sold by third parties "may not grant the access they advertise", and that some were counterfeit. The public viewing area has no gate price. It has a queue, and this is its official timeline, from the 2025-26 edition's published schedule:

The 2026 performer list is not out yet. The times have held for years; plan around them, not the names.

What time should you get to Times Square, and what are the rules?

Before 3pm for a block with a view of the Ball, earlier on a mild night. The pens fill from 43rd and Broadway northward and close when full. The organizer's rules for the whole stay: all bags searched; no backpacks, umbrellas, lawn chairs, picnic blankets, large coolers or alcohol; no restrooms; no food vendors; step out and you do not get back in.

Those rules are the price of the free option: nine hours in a fenced block, with a normal high of 41°F and a normal low of 30°F on 31 December at Central Park (National Weather Service, 1991-2020). The organizer's advice: layered, wind- and water-resistant clothing, a hat, and no caffeine or alcohol.

Three more rules decide your day:

  • Entry is only from 6th or 8th Avenue. Once Broadway and 7th Avenue close you cannot cross them. Hotel east of Broadway, use 6th; west, use 8th.
  • Closures start before dawn. On 31 December 2025 the City's notice detoured traffic from 2am around 42nd to 49th, closed garages at 11am, and from 4pm reserved 6th to 8th Avenue between 42nd and 57th for emergency vehicles only. The 2026 notice is not out yet; expect the same shape.
  • The best views are along Broadway from 43rd to 50th and up 7th Avenue to 59th. The sound system sits where Broadway and 7th cross, so the far-north pens see the Ball but hear less.

The practical consequence is a hotel decision. If you want to be in a pen at 2pm and in bed by 2am, you want a room inside or next to the closed zone, and those rooms price up first. Check what's left for your night: New York hotels with live prices for 31 December.

How many people actually go to Times Square on New Year's Eve?

Nobody knows, and the number most pages print has no source. The organizer's history page says "hundreds of thousands" gather each year. The NYPD has put it at 2 million. G. Keith Still, a crowd scientist who measured the space, says the real pen crowd is likely under 100,000. The "1 million" you see everywhere is nobody's estimate.

We went looking for the origin of "1 million" because it was in our own first draft. It is not on the Times Square Alliance's site, which gives no in-person figure beyond "hundreds of thousands" and a worldwide audience "estimated at over one billion". In 2018 the Associated Press asked the Alliance where the numbers came from: the NYPD, then saying 2 million. Still, of Manchester Metropolitan University, told AP the viewing area holds about 51,000 people at three per square meter, or 86,000 at five.

Why it matters: the pens are fenced blocks that fill one by one, and the whole area holds a stadium crowd, not a city. Arrive early and you are in a block with a view. Arrive at 8pm and you are on 6th Avenue watching a screen.

How much more do New York hotels cost on New Year's Eve?

About five times more at the top of the market, and nothing at the bottom. On 19 October 2026 we priced a double room on book.navoy.io for Thursday 31 December 2026 against Thursday 14 January 2027. The cheapest room was $105 on New Year's Eve and $107 two weeks later. The median of the engine's top picks was $744 on 31 December and $153 on 14 January.

Night (1 room, 2 adults, taxes included)CheapestMedian of the 12 cheapestMedian of 12 top picksProperties listed
Thu 31 Dec 2026 (New Year's Eve)$105$127$744544
Thu 14 Jan 2027 (a normal Thursday)$107$165$153670

That gap is the whole story of the night. The hotels the engine ranks first, the central, well-reviewed ones inside and around the closed zone, run $571 to $1,221 on 31 December. The $105 rooms exist, but outside Midtown, which puts you on the subway at 12:30am with everyone else. Decide which of those two nights you are buying before you look at party tickets: the hotel, not the party, is where a New Year's Eve in New York gets expensive. Prices are live quotes on 19 October 2026 and will move. Check what's left for 31 December.

How much do Times Square New Year's Eve parties cost?

From $1,250 a person for a seat indoors at the Marriott Marquis with no view of the Ball, $4,000 for the same party with access to its terrace facing the Ball, and $7,000 for the top tier, all sold through BallDrop.com for 31 December 2026. Rooftop and restaurant parties price by tier; harbor cruises start around $368.

Only trust a price on the seller's own page, because resale listings for this night recycle old numbers. Here is what the sellers themselves showed on 19 October 2026:

Two things the table does not say. The Marriott Marquis tiers are all 21+, non-refundable, and carry service and processing fees the seller does not itemize. And the organizer's list of venues with a view also includes the Renaissance New York (R Lounge), Bar 54 at the Hyatt Centric, Tempo by Hilton at TSX Broadway, Beast and Butterflies at M Social, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Olive Garden, none with 2026 prices on a public page when we checked.

Where can you see New Year's Eve fireworks in NYC for free?

Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, where the Borough President and the Prospect Park Alliance host free fireworks at midnight with music from 10pm, in its 45th year as of 2025. Manhattan has no free fireworks for the public: the harbor show is for the cruise boats, Central Park's for the runners. Coney Island has had none in recent years.

The Brooklyn show is the one to plan around. In 2025 it was free and family-friendly, with an RSVP at prospectpark.org/nye, music at 10pm and fireworks at midnight, and the hosts asked people to arrive early. Two cautions: the 2026 edition had not been announced when we checked on 19 October, so confirm it in December; and on 31 December 2024 the celebration was called off that evening for expected high winds and lightning, after the drought watch had already replaced the fireworks with a light show. It was the first year in 44 without fireworks over Grand Army Plaza. Weather can cancel it. It cannot cancel the Ball.

The other free options, honestly rated:

  • The harbor fireworks near Liberty Island. The city does not run them; the cruise operators sail to them. CBS New York lists the Brooklyn Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Promenade as viewing spots. No official area, no guaranteed sightline.
  • Central Park. New York Road Runners sets off fireworks as the Midnight Run starts. Watching from the park is free; the run is the ticketed part.
  • Coney Island. Skip it for the night. The Parachute Jump ball drop of 2014 has not returned; CBS listed "no fireworks planned" for 2024 and local coverage says the same for 2025. The Polar Bear Club's New Year's Day plunge is open to the public if you want a Coney Island tradition on 1 January.
  • The webcast. The organizer streams the six hours free from 6pm at timessquarenyc.org, with a captioned and ASL version. From a hotel room in Long Island City it is the same Ball, closer than most pens.

How do you get around New York on New Year's Eve?

By subway, which runs a weekday schedule on 31 December with extra service from the evening into the small hours, and the 42 St Shuttle all night. Expect the Times Square station's street exits closed and nearby stops skipped from late morning. From JFK, AirTrain plus subway is $11.75 a person; AirTrain plus LIRR is $14 off-peak.

The MTA publishes its plan in late December. For 31 December 2025 it looked like this, and the pattern repeats each year:

  • Extra trains from the evening into early 1 January on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, C, D, G, L, N, Q and R and the 42 St Shuttle, some lines express until about 2:30am.
  • From 11:45am to 12:15am, uptown trains skipped 50 St, and trains skipped 49 St and 57 St-7 Av in both directions. Street exits at Times Sq-42 St were closed, and from 2pm the passageway to 42 St-Bryant Park ran one way, toward 6th Avenue.
  • On 1 January, subway and buses ran a Sunday schedule, so leave extra time for a morning flight. Alcohol was banned on the LIRR and Metro-North from noon to noon.

Fares at the time of writing: $3 a ride on the subway and bus. From JFK, the AirTrain is $8.75 and connects to the A or E at Howard Beach and Jamaica, or to the LIRR at Jamaica, where a ticket to Manhattan is $5.25 off-peak or $7.25 peak. From Jersey City, the PATH to 33rd Street is $3.25.

Search flights to JFK: flights to New York, 30 December to 2 January.

Where should you stay for New Year's Eve in New York?

Inside the closed zone (roughly 6th to 8th Avenue, 39th to 59th Street) if you are doing the pens and want to walk to bed at 1am. On a subway line with extra service if not: Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, the Upper West Side, or Jersey City on the PATH. That gap is the biggest line in the budget.

How the choices compare:

  • Midtown, inside the closures. Walk into a pen at 2pm, walk back at 12:30am. Be inside before 4pm, when 6th and 8th Avenues close to pedestrians; your hotel will say which avenue to use. Search by date: that is what the price check above does.
  • Long Island City. Across the river on the 7, which is on the extra-service list. Skyline views, a different price bracket.
  • Downtown Brooklyn or Park Slope. The base if Grand Army Plaza is your plan: the fireworks are a walk, Manhattan a few stops on 1 January.
  • Upper West Side. On the 1, 2 and 3, next to Central Park for the Midnight Run fireworks, close enough to join the pens.
  • Jersey City. A PATH ride to 33rd Street, outside the city's hotel market. Check how late the PATH runs that night.
Crowds in Times Square at night under the billboards
Times Square on an ordinary winter night. On 31 December the same blocks are fenced into viewing pens from 3pm, and the ones with a view of the Ball are full hours before it is lit at 6pm, which is why the hotel you can walk home to matters more than the party you buy. Photo: B C / Unsplash

Frequently asked questions

Is the Times Square ball drop free?

Yes. The Times Square Alliance says the public outdoor celebration is free and first come, first served, with no tickets. Viewing pens open at 3pm on 31 December and close one by one as they fill. Tickets exist only for private parties at hotels and restaurants around the square, and the organizer warns that some third-party "all access" passes have been counterfeit.

What time do the Times Square viewing areas open on New Year's Eve 2026?

At 3pm on Thursday 31 December 2026, according to the organizer, at entry points on West 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets from 6th and 8th Avenues. The Ball is lit and raised at 6pm, the 60-second descent starts at 11:59pm and the show ends at 12:15am. Blocks with a view of the Ball fill well before 6pm.

Are there bathrooms in Times Square on New Year's Eve?

No. The organizer states that there are no portable restrooms in Times Square during the celebration, and that if you leave your viewing area you cannot return to it. There are also no licensed food or drink vendors inside the closed area. Eat and drink before 3pm, limit liquids, and dress for about nine hours outside in temperatures that normally sit around freezing.

How much is a Times Square New Year's Eve party ticket?

From $1,250 a person for the Marriott Marquis party sold through BallDrop.com for 31 December 2026, which includes a five-hour open bar and dinner buffet but no view of the Ball. Terrace access to see the Ball is $4,000 and the top tier $7,000. The Knickerbocker prices its St. Cloud rooftop by tier and had already sold out its first tier by mid-October. Harbor cruises start around $368.

Where can you watch New Year's Eve fireworks in New York for free?

Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, where the Borough President and the Prospect Park Alliance host free fireworks at midnight with music from 10pm; the 2026 edition was not yet announced in October, and the 2024 celebration was cancelled for wind after drought had already swapped its fireworks for a light show. The harbor fireworks near Liberty Island are not a city event, but people watch from Brooklyn Bridge Park. Coney Island has had no New Year's Eve fireworks in recent years.
