Key Takeaways

  • Meeting Santa is free. There is no entrance fee to Santa Claus Village, and a visit to Santa Claus Office costs nothing every day of the year. The optional photo package starts at €57.
  • The room is the big cost. Statistics Finland put the average Lapland hotel room at €356 in December 2025, just over twice the €168 Finland average.
  • Activities are priced per ride, and they add up. At published prices for Christmas week: reindeer rides from €40, Snowman World €35, SantaPark from €42, a 2.5 km husky ride from €63, a 2-hour snowmobile safari from €119.
  • Two things open late or close early. Snowman World opens on 6 December 2026. SantaPark runs 31 October 2026 to 23 January 2027.
  • Skip paying twice for Santa. The SantaPark ticket already includes a private Santa meeting, and the village meeting is free.

Meeting Santa in Rovaniemi is free: Santa Claus Village has no entrance fee and Santa Claus Office is free all year. You pay for everything around him. For winter 2026-27, a husky ride at the village starts at €63, SantaPark at €42 and Snowman World at €35. A December hotel room in Lapland averaged €356 in 2025.

We built this trip in Navoy: a 6-day Rovaniemi family Christmas plan, 21 to 26 December 2026.

What is free in Rovaniemi at Christmas?

More than most visitors expect. Entry to Santa Claus Village is free, meeting Santa at Santa Claus Office or at the Christmas House is free, and so is walking into Santa Claus' Main Post Office. You pay only for what you add: photos, rides, food and the separate theme parks outside the village.

Visit Rovaniemi, the city's official tourism board, is direct about it: "There is no entrance fee to the Santa Claus Village." The village sits 8 km north of the centre on highway 4, and it is open every day of the year.

The catch is that the village is not one business. Its own FAQ describes it as more than 50 companies working side by side, each with its own prices and hours. That is why there is no single "ticket" to buy, and why the bill builds up one stop at a time.

Free at the village in Christmas 2026:

  • Santa Claus Office: free entry, open daily 08.00 to 20.00 from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
  • Santa Claus' Main Post Office: open daily 9.00 to 20.00 from 1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027. Postcards and stamps are extra.
  • The village grounds and the Christmas atmosphere cost nothing to walk around.

The one thing that feels free but isn't: the photo. Santa Claus Office does not allow personal photography or filming inside Santa's room, phones included. Elf photographers take pictures of every visit, and you choose afterwards whether to buy them. There is no obligation to buy.

In December, the office advises allowing about an hour in the queue, and entrance times can fill after midday on peak days. Go in the morning.

How much do Rovaniemi hotels cost over Christmas?

More than anywhere else in Finland. Statistics Finland reported an average hotel room price of €356 in Lapland in December 2025, against €168 for Finland as a whole, and Lapland's hotel occupancy that month was 79%. The room, not Santa, is where a Christmas trip gets expensive.

That €356 is a regional average across all of Lapland's hotels, not a Rovaniemi quote and not a glass igloo rate, so treat it as a benchmark rather than a price. Check what the price actually includes before you compare, because some charges only appear at checkout. Our guide to hotel fees that are not in the room price lists the common ones.

Demand is also climbing. Non-resident overnight stays in Lapland reached 0.55 million in December 2025, up 6% on the year before, according to the same Statistics Finland release.

How much more do Rovaniemi hotels cost on Christmas Eve?

About 1.6 times a mid-January night, and January is not cheap either. When we searched Rovaniemi on Navoy on 2 October 2026, the median of the 12 top-rated rooms for two on Christmas Eve was $866, against $542 on Thursday 14 January 2027. In January the 12 cheapest rooms still had a median of $352.

Median of 12 top-rated picks$866$542
Typical rooms shownmostly $575 to $1,13112 cheapest: $217 to $545

For Christmas Eve, the search returned only 12 rooms and the cheaper end was largely gone: apart from one outlier at $136, everything shown started at $575. That is the practical meaning of "book early" in Lapland. The choice most families face is not Christmas versus a cheap month, but Christmas versus three weeks later in the same snow, for roughly a third less.

How we measured: live Navoy hotel search, one room, two adults, one night, prices in US dollars including taxes and fees as shown, both nights checked the same day. Prices move daily, so treat these as a snapshot, not a quote.

How much do husky, reindeer and snowmobile rides cost in Rovaniemi?

In Christmas week, the shortest rides at Santa Claus Village start at €40 for a 6-minute reindeer ride and €63 for a 2.5 km husky ride. Longer safaris run from €119 for a 2-hour snowmobile safari, two people to a snowmobile, to €178 for a 3 km husky experience and €198 for a 3 km reindeer safari.

These are "from" prices published by the operators for winter 2026-27. The village reindeer rides charge a high-season rate from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027, shown first below. Prices are per adult unless stated, and the snowmobile price assumes two people sharing one snowmobile.

What each part of a Rovaniemi Christmas costs in winter 2026-27, from the free Santa Claus Office visit to a €198 reindeer safari and a €179 SantaPark Christmas dinner. Operator prices, per adult.

Three things are worth knowing before you choose. The short village rides are about the photo and the moment: six minutes behind a reindeer is lovely, but it is not a safari. The village husky rides run from 30 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, so they cover Christmas. Booking ahead is recommended, and walk-ins depend on space. One date trap: Lapland Safaris' cheaper 1-hour snowmobile safari is listed for January to April only, so for Christmas week look at its 2-hour safari instead.

Is SantaPark or Snowman World worth the ticket?

They are different things. SantaPark is an underground Christmas park with a private Santa meeting included, from €42 for adults and €37 for children aged 3 to 12. Snowman World is snow slides, a snow labyrinth and ice skating at €35 a person, open from 6 December 2026.

SantaPark (2026-27 season): open 31 October 2026 to 23 January 2027, including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and 26 December from 09:00 to 18:00. Tickets start at €42 for adults and €37 for children aged 3 to 12, under-3s free, with a booking fee added. SantaPark states that prices vary by date and availability, so a Christmas-week ticket can cost more than the starting price. Check your exact date in its booking system.

SantaPark also runs a Christmas Dinner on 24 and 25 December 2026, 19:15 to 21:30, at €179 per adult and €99 per child, booking fees extra.

Snowman World (2026-27 season): open 6 December 2026 to 17 March 2027, 10:00 to 20:00 until 6 January, subject to weather. One €35 ticket covers the whole day, and children under 2 go free.

Our take: if you are travelling with children who want a full day indoors out of the cold, SantaPark earns its ticket. If the main point is meeting Santa, the free visit at Santa Claus Office does the same job.

How do you get to Rovaniemi for Christmas?

Fly into Rovaniemi Airport (RVN). It handled 1.1 million passengers in 2025, a record, and Finnair planned more than 10 daily Helsinki to Rovaniemi flights on peak days last winter. Santa Claus Village is about 4 km from the airport and 8 km from the city centre.

Rovaniemi's December traffic keeps setting records. Finavia, which runs the airport, reported its one-millionth passenger of the year on 19 December 2025. For winter 2025-26 Finavia listed flights to Rovaniemi from 38 international airports. From January to November 2025, the UK was the biggest international market at 21% of international passengers, ahead of France at 17% and Italy at 13%.

New direct services announced by Finavia for winter 2026-27:

Visit Rovaniemi keeps a winter route list, subject to change, and schedules can shift, so confirm days with the airline. Without a direct flight, you connect through Helsinki.

On the ground, local bus line 8 runs from the city centre to Santa Claus Village, and the village is in the network's zone A, the same as the centre.

Christmas fares move fast, so read our guide on when to book Christmas flights, then search flights to RVN, 21 to 26 December.

What should you skip on a Rovaniemi Christmas trip?

Skip anything you would pay for twice. Santa is free at Santa Claus Office and already included in a SantaPark ticket, so you do not need a paid Santa experience on top. Skip the 6-minute reindeer ride if a longer safari is booked, and do not plan Snowman World before 6 December.

  • A second paid Santa meeting. If SantaPark is on the plan, its ticket includes a private meeting with Santa. The village visit is free anyway.
  • Buying photos you did not like. There is no obligation to buy the €57 package. Look at the pictures first.
  • Bringing a camera into Santa's room. It is not allowed, so do not build the day around your own shots.
  • Short rides when a safari is booked. If you have a 1-hour reindeer safari, the €40 village loop adds little.
  • Afternoon queues. In December, the Santa Claus Office queue runs about an hour and entrance times can fill after midday. Go first thing.
  • Package totals you cannot unpick. Compare any bundle against the line prices in this article. If the bundle costs more than the parts, book the parts.
