Sal Island Adrenaline: Kites, Salt Floats & Santa Maria Nights
See it in NavoyThree friends spend six packed days on Sal, with a kitesurf lesson on three separate days. The itinerary adds a float in the Pedra de Lume salt crater and a midday visit to the Buracona Blue Eye, when the light is best. It also includes a catamaran and snorkel outing and a bar crawl through Santa Maria each night. Costs are estimates in USD, and the schedule assumes you land around midday on Day 1 and leave late on Day 6.
1Touchdown & First Sunset
$160Land on Sal, transfer to Santa Maria and get in the water quickly. Watch the sunset from the pier, then start the nightlife on Rua 15 de Agosto.

Take a taxi from Amílcar Cabral Airport to Santa Maria (about 20 minutes, fixed fare). Drop your bags and change for the beach.
Santa Maria beach swim & stroll
Swim and walk along the long white-sand beach. Scout the kite school flags and check the wind and swell before your lessons.
Sunset at the Santa Maria pier
Walk out on the wooden pier at golden hour. Local fishermen unload their catch and there are good photos of the sun going down.
Seafood dinner on Rua 15 de Agosto
Have grilled fish, lobster or cachupa at a beachfront-area restaurant, with a first caipirinha or Strela beer.
Bar hop: Santa Maria nightlife
Go bar to bar along the main strip. Expect live morna and funaná music, beach bars and a lively crowd of locals and travelers.
2First Flight on the Wind
$395Start the kitesurf lessons while the morning conditions are manageable. Spend the afternoon on the water and the beach, then go back out at night.

Breakfast & coffee
Have eggs, fresh fruit and strong Cabo Verdean coffee before the lesson.
Kitesurf lesson #1: kite control & body drag
Learn safety, wind theory and kite control with an IKO-certified instructor, including body-dragging in the water. Sal has steady winter trade winds, so it is a good place to learn.
Beach lunch
Have a casual lunch of sandwiches, salads or grilled fish at a beach bar, and rest your arms.
Beach time & swim
Spend the afternoon on loungers or in the Atlantic. Watch the kiters while your muscles recover.
Dinner in town
Have dinner at a lively restaurant. Choose Italian-style or Cape Verdean food, as many options serve both.
Night out: beach bars & dancing
Spend the evening at the bars and live-music spots, then find a spot with a DJ or a dance floor.
3Floating in the Crater
$575Head to the east side for the salt crater at Pedra de Lume, then come back for your second kite lesson in the afternoon winds.
Floating in the Crater
Drive to Pedra de Lume
Take a private taxi or arranged transfer north-east, about 40 minutes. You pass through the desert-like landscape of the island.
Pedra de Lume salt crater float
Walk through the old salt tunnel into the volcanic crater. Float effortlessly in water about 26 times saltier than the sea, and take photos against the crater walls. Budget covers the taxi round trip and entry. Bring a towel and avoid shaving beforehand.
Lunch at the local seaside village
Stop for a simple lunch of fish and rice on the way back.
Return to Santa Maria & rinse off
Ride back to town, shower off the salt and prepare for the lesson.
Kitesurf lesson #2: water start
Move from body-dragging to the board with your instructor, practicing water starts. The afternoon wind is usually stronger.
Dinner & sunset-bar crawl
Eat well after a long day, then head to a few bars and a late-night spot.
4West Coast Wonders: Buracona at Noon
$470Tour the island's western side, timed so you reach the Blue Eye in Buracona at midday, when sunlight makes the pool glow blue. Add a mirage-like landscape stop and a shark snorkel in the afternoon.
West Coast Wonders: Buracona at Noon
Terra Boa salt flats & mirage
Start the private 4x4 tour at the flat, dry lake bed of Terra Boa, where heat can create mirage effects. Tour cost covers all stops today, including entry fees.
Buracona & Blue Eye (Olho Azul) at midday
Walk the lava-rock coast to the natural pools and the Blue Eye. Between about 11:30 and 13:00, the sun creates a vivid blue glow in the cave. Optionally swim in the pools if the sea is calm.
Late lunch at Palmeira
Eat fresh grilled fish at a local spot in the fishing port of Palmeira.
Shark Bay snorkel
Snorkel in the shallows of Shark Bay with juvenile lemon sharks. They are generally harmless, and you should still follow your guide's instructions.
Return & dinner
Return to Santa Maria, shower and have dinner.
Bar night in Santa Maria
Have a lively night out with live music or a DJ at one of the main bars.
