Key Takeaways

  • The 2026/27 edition is confirmed, the dates are not. On 12 October 2026 Harbin Ice-Snow World announced its 28th edition: 1.25 million square meters, 400,000 cubic meters of ice and snow, and a Disney Frozen zone. As of 19 October it has published no opening date and no ticket price.
  • The pattern is tight. The park opened on 18 December 2023, 21 December 2024 and 17 December 2025. The city's festival ceremony was on 5 January in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Two of the last three seasons ended early because the weather warmed.
  • Last season's adult ticket was 328 yuan, about $49 at the ECB rate on 19 October 2026, a price Xinhua says was held from the season before.
  • Beijing to Harbin is about 4.5 hours by high-speed train. Second-class fares listed in 2026 ran 598 to 665 yuan, roughly $90 to $100.
  • January averages -17°C (1°F), nights near -22°C (-8°F). Most US passport holders need a visa unless the trip fits China's 240-hour visa-free transit rule, which a simple round trip does not.

Harbin Ice-Snow World, the festival's main park, has confirmed its 2026/27 edition at 1.25 million square meters, its largest ever, but has not yet published an opening date or ticket price. The last three editions opened between 17 and 21 December, and last season's adult ticket was 328 yuan, about $49 at today's exchange rate.

We built this trip in Navoy: a 4-day Harbin Ice Festival plan, 4 to 7 January.

When does the Harbin Ice Festival 2027 open?

Not officially announced yet. On 12 October 2026 the park confirmed the 28th Harbin Ice-Snow World for "this winter", no date. In the last three seasons it opened on 18 December 2023, 21 December 2024 and 17 December 2025, and the city-wide festival held its opening ceremony on 5 January in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

Two different things share the name "Harbin Ice Festival", and most guides blur them.

The first is Harbin Ice-Snow World (哈尔滨冰雪大世界), the ticketed park on the north bank of the Songhua River. It opens in mid-December and runs until the ice stops holding, usually late February.

The second is the China Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, the city-wide event. Its opening ceremony is held at the park on 5 January, and China Daily reports the 42nd edition ran through the end of February 2026 with more than 200 activities across the city. The Sun Island snow sculpture expo, the ice lanterns and the frozen-river activities all sit under this umbrella.

Here is what the official record shows for the park, edition by edition:

The closing dates are the part other pages skip. The 27th edition shut on the evening of 21 February 2026, two days after a record 120,000 visitors on the third day of Chinese New Year, because temperatures broke historical highs and the ice began to melt. The park refunded tickets dated 20 to 28 February and offered those visitors a free entry to the next edition. Generous, but it does not rescue a flight.

So if you want certainty, aim for the first half of January. It sits inside every recent season, it includes the 5 January ceremony night, and it avoids Chinese New Year week (New Year's Day is 6 February 2027), when the park set its attendance record. Our guide to traveling in Asia during Chinese New Year 2027 explains what else closes that week.

Expect a late announcement: the park confirmed the 27th edition's opening on 15 December 2025, two days before the gates opened, after Xinhua had reported a "mid-to-late December" target on 25 November. Book a refundable room now and lock it once the date is out. Check what's left for your night: Harbin hotels with live prices.

How much more do Harbin hotels cost on the festival's opening night?

Not much, on current prices. On 19 October 2026 we priced a double room on book.navoy.io for Tuesday 5 January 2027, the customary opening-ceremony night, against Tuesday 26 January. The cheapest room was $26 and $27; the median of the engine's top picks was $158 and $159. The inventory is thin, 21 properties, and the bed is the cheap part of this trip.

Night (1 room, 2 adults, taxes included)CheapestMedian of the 12 cheapestMedian of 12 top picksProperties listed
Tue 5 Jan 2027 (opening-ceremony night)$26$55$15821
Tue 26 Jan 2027 (a normal January Tuesday)$27$91$15921

Harbin hotels are cheap by US standards: a well-reviewed central room runs about $150 a night on either date, and the opening night carried no premium on the day we checked. The money goes on the flight, the $49 ticket and the cold-weather kit. With so few properties listed, the risk is not price but availability: book the Songbei or Central Street room now, refundable, and keep it when the park announces its date. Prices are live quotes on 19 October 2026 and will move. Check what's left for your night.

How much do Harbin Ice Festival tickets cost in US dollars?

Last season's standard adult ticket at Harbin Ice-Snow World was 328 yuan, about $49, with a 240 yuan ($36) concession ticket and a 298 yuan ($45) opening-week price from 17 to 23 December 2025. Children 1.2 meters and under, children aged 6 and under, and adults 65 and over entered free. The park has not published 2026/27 prices.

Conversions use the European Central Bank reference rate of 19 October 2026 (7.4991 yuan and 1.1225 dollars to the euro, so 6.68 yuan to the dollar). Pay in yuan and your card will set the final figure.

Three things about the price that matter more than the number:

It has not moved. When construction on the 27th edition started in November 2025, Xinhua reported that the standard adult price would stay unchanged from the previous season, and ticket resellers listed the same 328 yuan for the 2023/24 edition. A 28th-edition increase is possible, but there is no sign of one yet.

Foreign passports work at the gate. China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism portal reported in February 2026 that the park "has adopted international ticketing procedures, accepting passports and overseas payment methods" and provides multilingual guide services. Online pre-sale runs through Chinese platforms and the park's WeChat mall, which is harder from abroad, so budget time to buy on arrival or through a reseller.

The slide is a separate queue. The Super Ice Slide (521 meters at its longest in the 27th edition) required an advance reservation through the park's official WeChat account in the 2024/25 season, and its queue had a 300-meter windproof shelter. Expect to wait.

How do you get from Beijing to Harbin for the ice festival?

By high-speed train in about 4.5 hours, or by air to Harbin Taiping International Airport (HRB), 33 kilometers southwest of the center. The fastest G trains leave Beijing Chaoyang station and reach Harbin West in 4 hours 33 minutes; second-class fares listed in 2026 ran 598 to 665 yuan, about $90 to $100 one way.

Rail figures come from schedule listings, not from China Railway directly; treat them as a guide and check 12306 for your date.

From the airport, the China Southern airport guide puts the drive at about 45 minutes. Third-party guides list the airport bus at 20 yuan (about $3); the airport information page shows no fare, so have small notes ready. Flying from the US usually means a Chinese hub anyway, which is why the train from Beijing is worth comparing.

Do Americans need a visa for the Harbin Ice Festival?

Usually yes, unless the trip qualifies for China's 240-hour visa-free transit. The National Immigration Administration's rule, as republished by the Shanghai government on 20 August 2026, covers nationals of 57 countries including the United States, entering through 65 designated ports, for up to 240 hours, provided you hold an onward ticket to a third country or region.

The trap is the word transit. A round trip from the US to Harbin and back is not a transit, so it does not qualify. The exemption applies when you arrive in China from one country and leave for a different one, with the onward ticket already confirmed. Travel guides list Harbin Taiping International Airport among the eligible ports; we could not confirm that on an official page, so check the National Immigration Administration's current port list or your nearest Chinese consulate before you book. Work, study and journalism still need a visa under any version of the rule. Rules change: read the official page, not a summary, the week you fly.

How cold is Harbin in January, and what should you pack?

Very. Harbin's January average is -17.3°C (0.9°F), with an average daily low of -22.4°C (-8.3°F) and high of -11.8°C (10.8°F), on the China Meteorological Administration's 1991 to 2020 normals. The park is outdoors and at its best after dark, which means standing in that cold for three or four hours.

Daily mean-17.3°C0.9°F
Average daily low-22.4°C-8.3°F
Record low-42.6°C-44.7°F

The park knows this: the 27th edition had 200 sets of tables and chairs in warming huts, and the slide queue ran through a windproof shelter. Even so, the cold decides your evening more than the ticket does.

What works: insulated boots with real tread (the paths are ice), a windproof outer layer over wool, a balaclava or face covering, lined gloves with thin liner gloves underneath so you can work a phone, and hand warmers in every pocket. Phone and camera batteries drain fast in deep cold, so carry a power bank inside your coat. We do not price the kit because no official source does; buy it before you fly, not at the gate.

Where should you stay in Harbin for the ice festival?

Either in Songbei, the district north of the Songhua River where Ice-Snow World sits, or in Daoli around Central Street on the south bank, which Metro Line 2 links directly to the park's own station. If you arrive by high-speed train, Harbin West station is the gateway, and airport bus Line 2 serves it too.

How the three bases compare:

  • Songbei (north bank, near the park): the shortest cold walk home after a night in the park. Metro Line 2 has a station named Ice-Snow World, and airport bus Line 4 serves the area. Fewer restaurants and less street life than the old center.
  • Daoli, around Central Street (Zhongyang Dajie): the pedestrian avenue of the old Russian-era city, the frozen river at the end of it, and the Sun Island expo across the water. Metro Line 2 to the park; airport bus Line 3 to the airport. The classic first-timer base.
  • Harbin West station area: practical for a train-in, train-out trip from Beijing, with the metro to everything else.

Frequently asked questions

When does the Harbin Ice Festival 2027 start?

The park had not announced it as of 19 October 2026. Harbin Ice-Snow World confirmed its 28th edition on 12 October 2026 for "this winter" without a date. It opened on 18 December 2023, 21 December 2024 and 17 December 2025, and the city's festival ceremony has been on 5 January in each of the last three years. Treat mid-December to early January as the likely window, not a date.

How much is a ticket to Harbin Ice and Snow World?

Last season's standard adult ticket was 328 yuan, about $49 at the ECB rate on 19 October 2026, with a 240 yuan ($36) concession and a 298 yuan ($45) opening-week price. Children 1.2 meters or under and adults 65 and over entered free. The 2026/27 price has not been published; Xinhua reported the adult price was held flat for the 2025/26 season.

How long does the Harbin Ice Festival last?

The park ran 65 days in 2025/26 (17 December to 21 February) and 68 days in 2024/25. The city-wide festival opens on 5 January and, per China Daily, ran through the end of February in 2026. Two of the last three park seasons ended early for warm weather, so late February is the riskiest time to arrive.

Is late February too late for the Harbin Ice Festival?

It can be. The 27th edition closed on 21 February 2026 after temperatures broke records and the ice started to melt, and the 25th edition closed on 15 February 2024 after the park cited rising temperatures and high winds. The park refunded late tickets in 2026 and offered a free visit the following season, but a flight is not refunded. Early January is the safer window.

Can foreigners buy Harbin Ice-Snow World tickets?

Yes. China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism portal reported in February 2026 that the park accepts passports and overseas payment methods and offers multilingual guide services. Online pre-sale runs on Chinese platforms and the park's WeChat mall, which is awkward from abroad, so plan to buy at the gate or through a reseller, and reserve the Super Ice Slide separately once you are inside the system.
